Summary:
A Swiss university and a hospital sleep centre prepare a Eurostars proposal for the development of a sleep diagnosis assistant. The aim is to develop a tool to help physicians improving the collection, storage and analysis of patient data. The platform is a medical device tool (EU directives) and has to be certified. The consortium seeks an SME coordinator involved in the EU medical market, aware of the complexity to develop such a platform and be interested to commercially exploit the device.
Description:
The objective of the project is to develop a sleep diagnosis assistant (SDA) platform to collect, store and analyse patient data, including polysomnogram. The tool can assist sleep physicians to improve their diagnosis and to identify disease early markers (comorbidities).
The project will take care of the development of an easy to access database and a data mining tool.

The expertise of the consortium, consisting of a Swiss university and a hospital sleep centre, already includes:
- Data mining and statistical data analysis.
- Bio-signal processing and pattern recognition.
- Machine learning.
- Sleep research.
- Enterprise and web-based development platforms.

The Swiss consortium is seeking an SME coordinator or research centre with the legal form of an SME (R-Y-D performing SME according to Eurostars guidelines) with experience in medical/scientific development. Particularly, the partner should be operative in the medical and human health area and be able to exploit commercially the SDA platform.

In addition, the SME should have experience in medical devices and software development with:
- Knowledge of European market area.
- Experience in developing medical software platform.
- Experience in collaborating with hospitals.
- Software engineering methodologies and technologies.

The project duration will be 32 months. The project will be conducted in two stages.
- Development of the platform with already existing data.

The Eurostars call deadline is 14 September 2017.

The deadline for expressions of interests is 30 April 2017.

Advantages and Innovations:
Benefit and Advantages:
- The development of a new platform will help sleep physician to improve their diagnosis, saving time and early identifying disease markers.
- The exploitation of existing expertise and datasets.
- The acquired know-how in the complex sleep research area will allow the participants to develop new system for possible future applications in other medical areas.

Innovations:
- A similar platform that operates in a geographically distributed environment does currently not exist.
- The physicians connected to the network are updated with information about similar cases in a short time. This information can help them to reduce time to diagnosis and improve patient treatment.
- The project will offer an innovative and flexible platform, compatible with already adopted sleep acquisition systems.
- Thanks to its semi-automated sleep scoring and an expert diagnosis system the platform will facilitate sleep physician work, and enhance the clinical performance.
