Description:
This UK company is a pre-cast concrete manufacturer of giant interlocking blocks. Blocks are made to clients´ needs with regards to concrete strength and durability. The company is flexible in its approach to the clients needs and also works for a circular economy concept with waste management companies to utilise by-products such as pulverised fuel ash (PFA), ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGSBS), and other suitable ashes as an additive for specific clients.

The concept of processing waste materials into valuable end products, such as blocks for building, whilst hugely reducing the current processing or disposal costs and significantly improving environmental performance in terms of reduction land fill and reduced CO2 emissions has been proven to be successful in a SME Instrument phase 1 project.

The concept tests which have been undertaken on the final product have proven that the process can be considered to be commercially viable and as such the company is looking to continue to progress the project.

The company seeks to explore all potential opportunities to collaborate with partners, utilising additional expertise and other accessible funding opportunities. They have identified partners and key technology/service providers for the next stage of development already and are currently working with them in order to maximise the potential for the project and commercial benefit for all - commercial and environmental.

This geopolymer is intended to be stronger, denser, more resistant to chemical attack and more waterproof than concrete. The UK company plan to develop it for use in their 1-tonne ´Lego´ style interlocking blocks.

These blocks provide an easy to install, flexible and re-usable construction system with unparalleled protection from impact, blast and water. It is suitable for temporary, emergency or permanent construction. It is a flexible -Y- low cost construction system that is easy to use, quick -Y- simple to build, dismantle -Y- re-locate. Due to its unique interlocking design it can be dry laid, or it can be laid with mortar for a permanent solution. No maintenance is required.

Two men can dry lay a 50-metre long 1.2m high wall in just 1 hour. It can be used for a wide variety of applications such as;
· Flood Defence - permanent or mobile as part of Environment Agency´s strategy
· Land Defence - landslide protection -Y- erosion control (permanent or mobile)
· Security -Y- Construction - walls, compounds, barriers
· Transport - road -Y- culvert repairs, railway embankments, barriers
· Bulk Storage -Y- Segregation - construction; agriculture; recycling

They would be expected to: · Utilise sodium silicate waste stream. · Utilise the precipitated salt mixture to provide the amorphous aluminosilicate component of the UK company´s geopolymer. · Potentially use a portion of the sodium silicate stream to generate colloidal silica, to further increase strength.
