El objetivo es mejorar algunas de las funciones de la máquina y obtener un producto comercializable. Específicamente buscan un proveedor de baterías de alta tecnología y de un sistema de monitorización del consumo energético para los distintos componentes de la máquina (tracción, corte y mantenimiento). La fecha límite de la convocatoria es el 17 de marzo de 2016 y el plazo para presentar expresiones de interés finaliza el 11 de marzo.

Two Italian SMEs, together with Torino University, have developed a prototype related to an innovative electrical machine for herbs harvesting in organic farming. They are looking for new collaborations to submit a Manunet proposal for the optimization of some features of the machine, obtaining a close to market product. They are looking for a Partner which provides hi-tech batteries and energy consumption monitoring system for the different parts of the machine (traction, cutting and services).
Description:
Herbs cultivation is increasingly diffusing, in particular in mountain areas, providing new income sources in many territories often considered as marginal areas. Harvesting is the most heavy and time-consuming operation for farmers, who cannot usually adopt conventional machines due to the particular working environment. Moreover, herbs cultivation is often carried out adopting organic farming practices, therefore environment friendly solutions are appreciated, in some cases mandatory.
These considerations guided a team of two SMEs and a research group of the Department of Agricultural Forestry and Food Sciences (University of Torino) towards the development of a prototype of an innovative machine for herbs harvesting (see attached figures). It was specifically conceived to operate in small and slopped fields. For these reasons the prototype has small dimensions (1.2 m x 2.5 m) and a 4 wheel drive traction system. The machine is fully electric, included the cutting and product collecting systems. The operator can drive the machine by a remote control system in order to avoid his presence on board, eliminating the ricks due to possible machine overturning and reducing consumption. A preliminary set of tests on the prototype was successfully concluded at the end of 2015. The good results achieved during the experimental trials, together with a significant interest shown by farmers, have encouraged the team to present a proposal for a Manunet project aimed to improve and optimize the prototype in order to obtain a close to market machine. Beyond the optimization of the mechanical structure and the traction control system, which can be done by the team, other important features to increase the machine reliability are the adoption of new kind of batteries as well as the development of a system for the real-time monitoring of the energy consumption of the different parts of the machine. This system, integrated within the machine control unit, would allow better exploiting of the battery life during the harvest operations. In particular, on the basis of the power absorption of traction, cutting and product collecting systems it will be possible, e.g., to modulate the working speed in order to preserve batteries and complete the harvest on a field. The team is looking for a Partner able to provide high performance batteries on the base of the specifications of the machine and to develop an energy consumption monitoring system both concerning hardware and software components.
