Una pyme letona ha desarrollado una tecnología vanguardista de combustible dual que encuentra aplicación en el sector marítimo. La empresa está interesada en participar en un proyecto del programa Horizonte 2020 (Innovaciones para eficiencia energética y control de emisiones en transporte acuático) para transferir la tecnología al sector marítimo. Se buscan tres socios académicos o industriales con experiencia en motores marinos y tanques de almacenamiento de gas natural licuado, así como astilleros para probar la tecnología.

An SME from Latvia has developed proprietary state-of-the-art dual fuel technology applied in locomotive sector. In the H2020 programme "Innovations for energy efficiency and emission control in waterborne transport" project the company plans to transfer the technology to marine sector. Three academic or industrial partners are sought for project proposal: 1) with knowledge in vessel engines; 2) with experience in liquefied natural gas storage tanks and 3) shipyard company - technology tester.
The company has vast specific knowledge and know-how in design of low-cost, scalable, installable at minimum cost and lead time dual fuel system/kit tailored for various diesel fuel applications, focusing on locomotive sector. The company is facilitating the transition of heavy duty transportation sector from diesel fuel to natural gas/bio-methane and synthetic gas. They are doing it by developing and deploying solutions for conversion and retrofit of existing diesel applications to natural gas usage.
Responding to the needs of vessel operators and market opportunities the company with project partners are planning to develop proprietary dual fuel technology and design the universal, cost-effective dual fuel system tailored for vessels equipped with medium/high speed 4-stroke diesel engines. The project realisation will accelerate diesel vessel market transition from oil based diesel fuel to cheaper, cleaner and much more sustainable alternative of bio fuel - methane either in form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) methane. Switching the fuel will enables marine sector to strengthen the advantage of shipping routes decreasing fuel costs, at the same time complying with tougher environmental and exhaust standards.
To complement the competence the company is looking for following partners:
Partner #1: A partner with knowledge in vessel engines, preferably research institution/university involved in research in marine engineering, particularly in ship medium speed 4-stroke engines. It would be a great advantage if institution has an engine testing branch.
Partners #2: A partner with experience in LNG storage tank development and installation. It would be an advantage if company is planning to improve vessel storage tank design or planning other investments to improve storage tanks.
Partner #3: During the project implementation engine tests are planned in diesel mode and dual fuel mode. Preferably the partner should be a shipyard company willing to participate in dual fuel system development, because after successful project implementation the company is looking for a long-term cooperation to ensure vessel retrofit activities.

Advantages and Innovations:
Results of the project will be a universal, cost-effective, replicable in production and simple to mount dual fuel system for aftermarket medium/high speed 4-stroke marine diesel engines that will operate on high-pressure CNG and/ or LNG substituting marine fuels with substitution rate 75-80% and, compared to present diesel engine technology, will reduce emission footprint by: CO2: 10%, NOx: 15-25%, SOx: 90%.
