Una red británica de biotecnología está formando un consorcio para presentar una propuesta a la convocatoria BBI D2 del programa H2020. El objetivo del proyecto es estudiar la multivalorización integral de algas para obtener materiales avanzados y aditivos de alto valor añadido. El consorcio busca usuarios finales (socios industriales) de exopolisacáridos, biomasa de algas y ficobiliproteínas. La fecha límite de la convocatoria es septiembre de 2017.

A UK industrial biotechnology network is preparing a consortium and proposal to address the BBI D2 call under H2020. The consortia is seeking large industrial partners who could be end-users for products produced, such as exopolysaccharides, algae biomass, phycobilliproteins. The project will study the integrated multi-valorisation of algae into advanced materials and high added-value additives.
Some algae are already exploited at a commercial scale for instance as a food additive or for aquaculture. This encompasses mostly the valorisation of single products, like the utilisation of the biomass as a whole, or of specific high value constituents like astaxantin and the phycobilliprotein colorant. Even if still in its infancy stage, the simultaneous valorisation of multiple products from the algal biomass has been considered key to improve the general economics of algal production and to provide new options to valorise aquatic biomass also in other sectors.

Cyanobacteria contain exopolysaccharides and phycobilliproteins. Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are homopolymeric or heteropolymeric molecules. EPS have excellent safety profiles and have pharmacological, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, herbicidal and insecticidal applications, as well as prospective uses as anticoagulant, antithrombotic, anticancer, immunomodulatory and bioflocculant agents.

The phycobilliproteins are part of the light harvesting complex and act as a chromophore within cyanobacteria. They are highly water soluble, brilliantly coloured, highly fluorescent proteins and have already commercial applications as a blue food colorant as well as fluorescent probes. Cyanobacterial phycobiliproteins have gained importance in the commercial sector, as they have several applications. The primary potential of these molecules are as natural dyes but a number of investigations have shown on their health-promoting properties and broad range of pharmaceutical applications. Thus, one of the applications of the phycobilliprotein phycocyanin is to use it as food pigment replacing current synthetic pigments.

This project aims to develop new and more efficient processes to separate, purify and extract EPS, phycobilliproteins and nutritional food additives at a sufficiently high yield and low cost to allow a cost-effective scale-up and add value in a number of market segments.

This project includes participants with multidisciplinary scientific backgrounds and will combine bio technologically based industries and research institutions across the countries eligible for this funding call.

The industrial biotechnology network is seeking industrial partners with experience in the development of cyanabacterial EPS production to be an industrial partner and end user.
