Description:
An Italian innovative startup, founded in 2012 as a research spin-off, has developed and engineered an innovative and very effective solution to significantly reduce the energy consumption and costs (up to 60%) of highly virtualised / large scale data centers (DC).

The company, partner of major providers of IT and networking solutions, together with an Italian research centre, is working on a H2020 proposal on the topic EE-20-2017 "Bringing to market more energy efficient and integrated data centres" (deadline: 19 Jan 2017).

Data Centre (DC) energy consumption is very high, being about 1.5% of global energy with continued rapid growth. On average, computing consumes 60% of total energy while cooling consumes 35%. Commonly, physical hosts are utilized at only 30%-50% with very low efficiency since the consumption of energy of a fully utilized host is quite similar to that in idle condition. This implies a wasteful use of capital and data center capacity.

Such an issue is addressed by a smart and effective approach, developed by the company, based on an innovative bio-inspired probabilistic algorithm that consolidates the maximum number of virtual machines on the minimum number of physical servers in a data center, enabling the switch off/hibernation of those freed-up, making them dynamically available as additional capacity for incremental workloads.
The solution can be unobtrusively integrated with existing DC virtualisation environments and it has been validated in real test-beds in partnership with major providers of IT and networking technologies.
Besides energy reduction, the solution allows highly improved monitoring, capacity planning, orchestration optimization, risk monitoring and mitigation in existing Data Centers.

Currently, the company is engaged in research and development activities to tackle, into commercial solutions, other critical issues such as load-balancing among geographically remote data centres under varying conditions of cost / availability of energy. The topics of interest include adaptivity to external energy constrains, coordination with low-energy systems and renewable energy sources, integration in smart grids.

Within the project, the promoters will take care of the algorithmic research and systemistic development of such geographical and temporal load balancing techniques. Clearly, they will also bring to the partnership their very distinctive applicative knowledge with the energy optimisation of single data centers.

Thus, the promoters are interested to establish an industrial led research consortium that is able to exploit their expertise in geographical and temporal workload balance, which is one of the issues addressed by the call, with the other above mentioned issues, focusing on new and existing data centres (indicatively from 500 kW to 1 MW IT load).


More in detail, the partners are looking for an industrial coordinator and for other project partners, typically medium large companies, high tech SMEs, and research institutions, covering issues connected with innovative and energy efficient cooling solutions, waste heat reuse, integration of local and remote renewable energy sources, integration in smart grids, integration with district heating/cooling networks,integration of power backup system in the grid and use of heat pumps for efficient use of waste heat etc.
Preferably ,expected partners should have been already engaged in specific industrial R-Y-D projects and/or in validated solutions in private or public programmes (such as those addressed by 7FP - Smartcities projects RenewIT, DC4Cities, Dolfin, Genic, GreenDataNet, GEYSER).

The expected project duration is 3 years.

The promoters have a very strong scientific and industrial know-how about workload balancing for single data centers. Within the project, the promoters will be mainly concerned with efficiency issues in Data Centers related to geographical and temporal workload balance. They will carry out the algorithmic research and systemistic development of such load balancing techniques. The promoters are looking for an industrial coordinator and for other project partners, typically medium large companies, high tech SMEs, and research institutions. Such partners should cover issues connected with innovative and energy efficient cooling solutions, waste heat reuse, integration of local and remote renewable energy sources, integration in smart grids, integration with district heating/cooling networks,integration of power backup system in the grid and use of heat pumps for efficient use of waste heat etc. Expected project partners will be medium/large companies, high tech SMEs, and research institutions covering such topics and already engaged in specific industrial research and development of validated solutions in private or public programmes (such as 7FP - Smartcities, projects RenewIT, DC4Cities, Dolfin, Genic, GreenDataNet, GEYSER).
