Un centro tecnológico español que participa en el proyecto "Sistema automático basado en sensores de ácidos grasos volátiles para un control optimizado de plantas de digestión anaerobia" busca socios industriales para presentar una propuesta a la convocatoria "Fast Track to Innovation" con el fin de adaptar el prototipo actual a otros entornos industriales (plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales y residuos alimenticios) y desarrollar un producto comercializable. El objetivo del proyecto es desarrollar un dispositivo online basado en técnicas ópticas para medir el perfil de ácidos grasos volátiles en tiempo real e integrar estas medidas en el sistema de control de plantas de digestión anaerobia para optimizar el proceso (aumentar la producción de biogás y mantener la estabilidad del proceso).

A Spanish technology centre participating in the ongoing project "Automated system based on on-line Volatile Fatty Acid sensors for an optimised control of anaerobic digestion plants", is looking for industrial partners to apply for "Fast Track to Innovation Pilot" call for proposal in order to adapt the existing prototype to other industrial environments (such as food waste or wastewater treatment plant), and to develop a marketable product.
Description:
The Spanish technology centre is participating in the ongoing project titled "Automated system based on on-line Volatile Fatty Acid sensors for an optimised control of anaerobic digestion plants" (AD-WISE). AD-WISE aims to develop an on-line device able to get real time volatile fatty acid profile (VFAP) measurements based on optic techniques and to integrate these measurements in the control system of the anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in order to optimise the process (maximise biogas production while maintaining process stability). To take into consideration that VFAP is the only predictive parameter to avoid process stops in biogas plants, is important when optimising biogas production process. The current methodology to measure VFAP is gas chromatography which is an expensive and complicated technique that cannot be used in biogas plants, and therefore it is externalised. As a consequence, the results are available in days or weeks after the sampling, loosing its value for process control purposes.
The system developed in the framework of AD-WISE project framework is able to measure VFA individually (i.e. acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate) by means of an optical sensor, that can be installed in the biogas plant to have real-time measurements. This allows using the VFAP for controlling purposes.
The prototype includes the following parts:
- Solid-liquid separator.
- Pumps and valves to carry the sample to the measurement point.
- Optical analyzer.
- Software with mathematical models to convert the signal to VFAP concentration.
- Decision support software recommending feed adjustment depending on the VFAP evolution.

Industrial partners working on the field of biogas production or owners of anaerobic digesters that might be interested in incorporating a novel technology to optimise biogas process are sought.
Advantages and Innovations:
The proposed system makes real-time measurements of volatile fatty acids individually. It has many different advantages compared to traditional measurement methods (gas chromatography):
- it allows the use of the VFA profile for control purposes.
- It is cheaper than current methodology to measure the VFA profile
- It ca be used in the biogas plants
- results are real-time generated
