An Italian SME developed an innovative wastewater treatment technology based on photosynthetic microorganisms, through the integration of microbial fuel cells in regular raceways-like ponds. The SME is looking for SME partners to apply to direct funding: EU NEPTUNE Blue Growth Accelerator project. The partners should operate in the following fields: biostimulants, cosmetics, feed sectors, natural paints and should be from specific regions of France, Greece, Poland, Romania, Spain and Sweden.
Description:
An Italian SME, in co-operation with a major Italian university, has developed an innovative bioelectrochemical raceway ponds for simultaneous microalgae cultivation and wastewater re-use: nutrients recovery and new added-value products.
Whithin this technology, the SME is willing to investigate the creation of new value chains through the valorization of microalgae biomass produced by recovering nutrients and carbon from wastewater treatment. Exploring and testing applications of the microalgae as biostimulants/fertilizers, pigment extraction, animal feed and bioplastics will be the aim.
To achieve this objective, the SME is looking for SME partners to create a project consortium and apply to direct funding (EU NEPTUNE Blue Growth Accelerator project, voucher scheme up to -Y-euro; 60.000,00 per partner SME, http://www.neptune-project.eu/Neptune-Accelerator/Call-for-Interest-SMEs-and-would-be-entrepreneurs).
In the Italian SME concept, microbial fuel cells (MFC) can assist microalgae cultivation, while treating organic-rich wastewater with simultaneous nutrient recovery. Photosynthetic oxygen sustains cathodic oxygen reduction, ensuring electrochemical performances comparable to air-cathode MFCs, while dissolved oxygen consumption at cathode helps to control dissolved oxygen concentrations in dense algae cultivations. Higher pH linked to cathodic reactions helps in preventing bacterial contamination of the culture. Macro and micro-nutrients, as well as organic carbon can be removed from wastewater and recovered in inorganic forms by electroosmotic forces and diffusion, fulfilling the needs of microalgal cultivation.
The Italian SME is looking for partners from specific countries and regions (upon funding scheme request) to sign research cooperation agreements. Due to the restrictions of NEPTUNE Blue Growth Accelerator project funding scheme, partners have to be located in the following nations and regions:
· France: Nouvelle Aquitaine, Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur
· Greece: Attica and Western Greece
· Poland: Masovia, Pomerania, Lesser Poland, Silesia
· Romania: North-West
· Spain: Basque Country and Catalonia
· Sweden: Skåne, Blekinge, Småland and Halland

Advantages and Innovations:
The bioelectrochemical raceway ponds for simultaneous microalgae cultivation and wastewater re-use, developed by the Italian SME, uses the electro-osmotic force generated by the bio-electrochemical system, to recover nutrients and oxidize organic carbon, while separating the anaerobic bacterial community from the microalgae bulk culture. This helps in obtaining high-quality microalgal biomass, as compared to state-of-the-art technology for wastewater treatment with microalgae.
