The Greek client seeks partners with expertise in environmental issues, and in particular water supply analysis and management, such as universities, research institutes, local authorities, and experts from relevant government bodies.
Description:
A Greek SME with expertise in environmental as well as energy research is preparing a project related to effective measures to ensure sufficient and sustainable water supply.

There is growing evidence that changes in the global hydro cycle over the past 50 years may be linked to changes in climate. Therefore methodologies for determining water resources available will be the main focus of this proposal. Based on the findings obtained from the project, and keeping in line with the requirements laid down by the EU Water Framework Directive, a common methodology will be developed, taking into account the special characteristics of the different types of resources (surface water, porous, fissured, karst aquifers) and water uptake for public supply.

Climate change may have significant influence on the ability to provide safe and sustainable drinking water. It is crucial from a strategic point of view to assess the possible range of impact of climate change on water resources used for drinking water supply and to delineate critical areas where measures are most needed. The main objective of this project is to safeguard water availability and safety for a sustainable water supply for citizens in different European regions for several decades in the face of climate change, which can result in land-use changes.

Therefore methods and instruments will be jointly developed to predict how changes to land-use can affect the water supply. Measures to adapt water supply management to these changes will be proposed.

The Greek SME is looking for partners to be included in the consortium, as follows:-
- universities with departments related to environmental issues
- research institutes in the field of agriculture, land reclamation
- local authorities (such as municipalities)
- government bodies such as ministry for the environment.
Advantages and Innovations:
Existing climate change models are mostly based on a rough spatial grid with an area of a few thousand to ten thousand square kilometres per grid. Due to the use of average values for climate variables, a limited set of indices observed and data collected, as well as because of measurement and modelling errors, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in these models. This project will use a downscaling approach to simulate the climate in the test beds of the specific catchment area. The project working group will carefully select climate change scenarios which will be subsequently applied to the project. Common issues will be discussed in 3 thematic workshops. Based on the activities carried out, a climate change database will be created. The aim is for stakeholders and end users to also be able to benefit from the project´s findings related to climate change and water supply.

Tasks to be performed:- - identify and apply an adequate model in order to quantify climate change on the water catchment are by analysing water balances - development of appropriate technical measures and - preparation of proposals for new legislation in order to mitigate possible negative effects of climate and land-use changes on water supply management - communication and public media activities in order to address the public via printed material and a dedicated web portal.
