EUREKA: Looking for Israeli partners in the technology and/or cultural sector for augmented reality project at museums
Summary:
An Austrian SME has a technological framework that bridges museum interpretation with mobile devices. It would like to develop it further in augmented reality (AR) environment. This will enable new access to museum exhibitions for visitors or curators and new applications. A piloting museum in Vienna is planned. The company seeks for technological partners in Israel with technological expertise in AR or cultural organisations as pilot users for the bilateral Eureka Austria-Israel call.
Description:
An Austrian R-Y-D-oriented SME based in Vienna has already developed a museum guiding platform with clients worldwide. The company would like to further develop it into an innovative mixed reality product and is preparing a project proposal aiming at using HoloLens in museums.

The project will demonstrate the unprecedented possibilities that augmenting content to the real world can offer to museums, culture and education under two scenarios:
1. The main scenario will enable visitors to create their own museum exhibition using hardware and web-services over the cloud. This will be demonstrated in a worldwide renowned museum where users will be able to use tablets to "collect" their favorite exhibits during their museum tour. After that, users will enter a "curating room" where they use AR hardware to design an own small exhibition out of their collected exhibits. By integrating social media and online accounts, the exhibition may be stored and shared. Optional components like e-learning or designing an own exhibition at home are envisaged to extend this use case.
2. The second scenario will allow museum curators to use AR technology in order to design new exhibitions for their venues by offering digital tools and services.

The whole project will be implemented based on the technology that has already been developed by the company which offers interactive, participative and interconnected information for visitors in museums, outdoor events, and companies. The technology is currently available in all platforms: smartphones, tablets, multimedia guides and touchscreens.

The technological research focus lies on integrating the current platform with HoloLens and creating a new application framework that will enable content development and content projection (AR applications, AR content) for museum curators and visitors.

The developed prototype will be piloted at one of the most renowned print-art museums in Vienna, but further pilots may be added in Israel with local cultural organisations. Public demonstration events will disseminate the technology though a series of AR exhibitions.

The project duration is expected to be 24 months.

The company is looking for collaboration partners from Israel to form a consortium and submit a joint proposal in the current Eureka bilateral Austria-Israel call. The call deadline is September 1, 2017. Call for expressions of interest are open until June 15, 2017.

The company is looking for:
- technological partners with experience in AR modeling or AR application development to co-develop the technological framework
- cultural partners: consulting or cultural institutions for piloting the demonstrator in Israel or creating further added value services and layers.
Advantages and Innovations:
HoloLens is a technology expected to reach the market in 2019. The innovations of the project include:
- demonstrating the new possibilities that AR offers to cultural institutions
- empowering integration with social media
- providing new ways how to explore exhibitions and to actively bring art -Y- culture back to the people
- added value to the compilation of new exhibitions with significant ease for museum curators
- data regarding the museum visit.
Stage of Development:
Proposal under development
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The technological base of the project will be Microsoft HoloLens hardware and it will be integrated with Microsoft services. Microsoft is considered as a contributing partner to the project (currently in negotiation). Thus, technical expertise in Microsoft hardware and software portfolio is required.
