El objetivo es desarrollar un sistema de desinfección basado en nebulización térmica contra el hongo Aspergillus para conductos de ventilación. The objective is the development of a thermal fogging disinfection system against Aspergillus for ventilation ducts. Description:
The Spanish SME was born from an industrial and research-oriented vocation to provide the market with innovative solutions for cleaning problems and it is specialized in the manufacture and development of equipment for the professional cleaning of extraction, air-conditioning and ventilation systems. The company is willing to find a solution for the disinfection against Aspergillus for ventilation ducts through a Eurostars project.

The risk of invasive infections by opportunistic pathogens, such as Aspergillus and Legionella, is low for healthy individuals. However, exposure to those organisms can be life-threatening or fatal for patients who are severely immunosuppressed. The main route of Aspergillus nosocomial infection is inhalation of airborne spores and pneumonia is the result of lung tissue invasion. Because of their size, Aspergillus spores remain suspended in air for a long time. Moreover, it is supposed that Aspergillus contamination from other sources was due to air contamination of hospital indoors. Despite the efforts to control these infections, deaths still occur from this cause. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new methods and technologies to ensure the complete disinfection of hospital facilities.

Thermal fogging is a process that transforms an active ingredient in an ultrafine mist, which allows a very uniform treatment both in large spaces and hard-to-reach areas. However, no system can currently disinfect ventilation ducts where Aspergillus spores remain in an efficient manner.

The objective of the project is to develop a versatile robotic and programmable system for thermal fogging disinfection of ventilation ducts and a chemical product specially formulated against Aspergillus. The system will be able to move within the ducts producing a large fog volume (100 m3/min approx.) and will be managed by remote control. The better access to all surfaces and the specificity of the chemical formula will guarantee 100% of disinfection, eliminating even the fungus spores.

Furthermore, the equipment will be electric, so it will not produce gas emissions associated with burning diesel nor produce waste to be managed.

The company is looking for EU SMEs interested in participating in a 2-year Eurostars project. The SMEs should have expertise in chemical products formulation, disinfection products development, products for thermal fogging or hospital disinfection. The SMEs should work in the development and formulation of an efficient chemical product with fungicide effects against Aspergillus and its spores to be nebulized by means of thermal fogging.

The call deadline is 18th February 2016. The company will receive expressions of interest until the 15th January 2016.
