La universidad busca socios industriales, especialmente pymes, con un fuerte interés en la ruta de producción ecológica de ácido propiónico, su purificación y explotación comercial. Se buscan socios con experiencia en desarrollo de procesos biotecnológicos o uso de ácido propiónico como producto biológico en otras aplicaciones, o que ofrezcan asistencia sobre la utilización de residuos de suero. La fecha límite de la convocatoria es el 2 de marzo de 2017 y el plazo para presentar expresiones de interés finaliza el 7 de febrero.

Sought are additional industrial partners, especially SMEs with strong interest in a "green" production route to propionic acid, its purification and commercial exploitation. Partners should either have experience in the development of biotechnological processes or use propionic acid as bio-based product in other applications, or support the projects need for whey wastes.
Description:
The call "Biotechnology for a sustainable bioeconomy" is within the ERA-NET-Cofund on Biotechnology (ERA CoBioTech) and aims to attract proposals focused on biotechnology as a key enabling technology (KET).

The goal of the proposed project is the efficient utilisation of whey as cheap and abundant substrate and of particular microbial cultivation techniques for the production of propionic acid with increased yield, titre, and productivity. Propionic acid is a valuable platform chemical with applications as a versatile preservative for food and feed products and as intermediate in chemical industries. It also serves as a synthetic building block to produce pharmaceuticals, crop protection agents and solvents, as well as thermoplastics. However, it is currently available only through fossil based production routes.

The goals of the call are addressed specifically and the project has several major advances to achieve results significantly beyond the state of the art: (1) development of novel cultivation techniques with fast growing anaerobic culture(s) and targeting propionic acid as the major product. This has been successfully developed within the consortium with glucose already and is transferrable to any type of sugar containing waste stream and is not limited to whey. (2) To target a preferred metabolic route and to increase the product yield, bioenergetics, redox balance and kinetic models will be developed. (3) An innovative process engineering approach will also be implemented: propionic acid will be efficiently removed in situ from the fermentation broth to reduce product inhibition and to improve productivity. In terms of costs we expect the integrated process to be competitive enough to drive the move away from fossil-based propionate acid production. Besides an innovative and integrated approach for process development this project also includes life cycle and economic assessment.

This project consortium is a collaboration of academic and industrial partners with multidisciplinary backgrounds and across the countries eligible for this funding call.

The proposal and envisaged consortium structure is in alignment with the ERA CoBioTech call in all aspects, i.e. covering the relevant scope and topic range, but would strongly benefit from an additional SME.

The industrial biotechnology partner(s) sought should be experienced in working with anaerobic microbes and wish to (1) either participate in the scale up of the new biotechnological process to a semi-pilot scale (1 m3 / TLR 5/6) or (2) use propionic acid as bio-based product in other applications.

(3) A partner from cheese industry would also be welcome to support the projects need for different quality of whey wastes. The bio-based propionate production will then be tuned to the waste provided.

Three different types of SMEs/industry partners would be valuable to complete the consortium: 1. Industrial biotechnology partners of any size, especially SMEs with strong interest in a "green" production route to propionic acid and its commercial exploitation. The partner ideally has experience in the development of biotechnological processes. The partner should be experienced in working with anaerobic microbes and wish to participate in the scale up of the new biotechnological process to a semi-pilot scale (1000 L / TLR 5/6). 2. Industrial partners, especially SMEs with an interest to use propionic acid as bio-based product in other applications. These might e.g. be producers of organic animal feed or producers of "green" additives for food or pharmaceuticals. 3. A partner from cheese industry would also be welcome to support the project need for different quality of whey wastes. The bio-based propionate production will then be tuned to the waste provided. Dairy farms or cheese factories could benefit from the project from exploitation of whey wastes.
