Description:
The aim of the DLIT project (Digital Light and Thermal controller to improve health, productivity and comfort in buildings) is to develop a novel hybrid integral control system to manage different elements of buildings: external shadings, digital lighting and local heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The management system must have an interactive and user-friendly interface in order to provide to the user information about the comfort conditions and the energy consumption.

The DLIT proposal will be devoted to demonstrate that it is indeed possible to achieve high levels of user satisfaction and significant reductions of energy consumption in a cost-effective fashion by combining more intelligent building control systems with interfaces that are able to inform the users and collect their preferences. The demonstration will be carried out in real environments for different building typologies and under different climates, carefully monitoring the system performance and user behaviour.

The DLIT controller will be created by combining three different subsystems that have already been demonstrated separately. Therefore, the goal is to develop a product with behavioural and user interaction capabilities that integrates an artificial intelligent algorithm for human centric lighting, HVAC and facade control together in a single solution. The management system will be developed as a stand-alone device able to monitor and control different elements of a building space: movable shading system, multi-channel LED light sources and HVAC units, taking into account energy, comfort and health interactions among them.

The DLIT technology is an innovative proposal which looks for answering the following questions:
- How can we influence user behavior through an adaptive daylight, digital light and thermal controller in order to improve environmental comfort, health and productivity in buildings?
- Which metrics should be used to evaluate that objective?
- Which are the technical solutions (an holistic approach combining energy efficiency, smart sensors and actuators, ICT tools) that could make it possible?
- To which extent these solutions are dependent on building boundary conditions (regarding climate and user profile)?
- How dependent are these solutions on the type of business plan?
- Which management strategies can be applied?
- How do we assess the impact of indoor environmental conditions on personal health, productivity and comfort?
- Which planning and design controller can be used?
