Summary:
A German SME from Berlin, who are specialised in data protection law, have prepared an application for Fast Track to Innovation (FTI). They wish to develop a solution which contains both technological and legal issues concerning data privacy and data security in smart grids. Partners should be from SMEs who specialize in technology for smart energy systems such as in the field of data security. Experience in FP7/Horizon2020 is appreciated.
Description:
Smart energy systems operate with large amounts of personal data which subsequently bears a risk for data security. In smart grids personal data must be protected. Big data and datability (a responsible way of handling data, especially if the data contains sensitive information) have a growing significance in a digital environment. For this reason, developing an innovative solution for data security is of high importance.

The SME aims to develop an "all-in-one" solution:
- a technical part regarding the development of a technological system
- an informative part to make the end users aware of data protection issues in the field of smart grids.

The solution will implement both "Privacy by Design" (data protection issues should have been checked and tested during the development of this new technolgy) and "Privacy by Default" (privacy settings would be set at a high level by default).

Smart grids need to be analyzed as a central part of the European energy overhaul. Ensuring data privacy, data protection and data security is not only the basis of smart energy systems but also a means of creating confidence. This solution is supposed to make sure citizens are free to choose and control which data they give to network operators. For this reason, datability issues will be analyzed taking into account the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The German SME will develop a certification regarding it´s data protection solution, so that the customer can be sure that their privacy is protected by using this new technology.

The company has specialised in data protection law for ten years. They are currently working on a project funded by the German government in the framework of the national program "Research for Civil Security 2012 to 2017" (Topic: "Civil Security - Fit for Europe (Future Call)"). This project serves primarily as preparation for an application for the program Horizon2020.
