El desarrollo de un ladrillo sostenible que contiene un 90% de residuos procedentes de la construcción ayuda a reducir residuos y supone un avance en el campo de reciclaje en todo el mundo. H2020 FTI PILOT 2015-01: Manufacturing and development of novel eco-building materials
A Scottish university spin-out company in building materials is seeking industrial manufacturing partners involved in demolition or waste management to support the commercialisation of an eco-building material as part of a Fast Track to Innovation proposal to be submitted on 1 December 2015. The development of a sustainable masonry brick made of 90% recycled content from construction waste will assist essential waste reduction and advance recycling worldwide.
The Challenge
Many European countries are facing a shortage of bricks for the construction industry due to rising demand for new homes. Combined with the ever increasing financial and environmental cost of energy (approx. 85% of the energy from the production of fired bricks goes into firing) low-energy alternatives to conventional construction materials are becoming increasingly popular and indeed, imperative.

According to new legislation, at least 70% of all construction waste will need to be recycled by 2025. The development of a sustainable masonry brick will assist essential waste reduction (in landfill and production materials) and advance recycling worldwide.

This exciting new building material has been born from traditional methods of earth construction, Scotland´s desire to reduce waste to landfill and Society´s imperative of reducing environmental impacts particularly in the building sector.

The Technology

This unfired eco-brick has excellent sustainability credentials - having 90% recycled content from construction waste, no energy input in its production in the form of gas use when compared to traditional clay-fired bricks and no cement use when compared with concrete blocks.

The eco-brick has a pleasant organic finish that does not require painting or surface treatment but has the potential for a range of products with colour finishes using recycled pigment. The performance characteristics of the eco-brick and its "build-ability" make it suitable for most of the applications usually reserved for traditional brick/cement products and historically unsuitable for air dried products.

The spin-out company, together with the university as coordinator, is preparing a proposal for submission to the H2020-FTI Pilot-2015-1 (Fast Track to Innovation Pilot) with a deadline of 1 December 2015. They are now looking for manufacturing partners to develop the commercial scale process for producing this technology. Also required is development of EU market assessment, legislative assessment and certification in EU markets.

The project is expected to last 156 weeks from project start to reaching full production capability. Funding awards for an FTI Pilot Project are at a rate of 70% of eligible project costs for industrial partners.

- Type of partner sought: The company is seeking industrial manufacturing partners to support the commercialisation of their eco-building material. The project requires knowledge in scaling up production, market assessment of the European markets and legislative assessments to highlight opportunities and threats to this product entering the market. The partners may be either demolition or waste management companies since they would have access to the required input materials and could provide greater development of closed loop product. - Specific area of activity of the partner: Partners should be involved in manufacturing, manufacturing process development, commercialisation of construction (or transferable) products. The partners would also ideally have distribution channels in place for delivering construction materials to market. The partners also ideally will understand and have been through certification of construction materials (or similar). - Field of expertise/experience: Demolition or waste management company - commercial scale manufacturing, sustainable design (not crucial at this stage), construction materials, certification of construction materials, product development. - Task to be performed by the partner sought: Help develop commercial scale manufacturing of eco-building product, the eco-brick. Work with the development team on the development of a quality protocol for the manufacture of the product and future products. Advise and engage in helping with certification in EU (and potentially other) markets. Possibly, the partner may want to engage in waste management systems, in particular construction and demolition waste which provide the input materials necessary for this, and future products.
