H2020-FTI Pilot-2015-1 - Seeking industrial automation partner to develop manufacturing equipment and process for transparent honeycomb insulation material
Summary:
A large UK glass processor working in the construction industry is seeking an EU production equipment manufacturer (outside the UK or Germany) to join their Fast Track to Innovation Pilot project. The aim of the project is to innovate and develop a commercial production process for transparent honeycomb insulating material, utilising background IP, prototype technology and current expertise. The opportunity is to design new production equipment for supply to global markets.
Description:
The project proposer employs over 390 people within 5 locations across the UK. The company's core business has been within the glass industry and they currently provide a wide range of glass/glazing products and services into the UK construction market, and more recently into the EU, the Middle East & Asia. The company's long term growth ambitions focus on the innovation of new glazing products for the Energy Efficient Buildings sector within Europe.

The main challenge for the glass industry is to considerably improve the energy performance of their products or risk losing market share to non-glass façade materials, which have more effective energy efficiency properties.

The project - to be submitted to the Fast Track to Innovation Pilot - has a main objective of developing a glazing component of a transparent honeycomb insulating material that will not only deliver exceptional energy efficiency (equivalent to a solid wall) but also provide the necessary daylighting benefits for health, wellbeing & productivity.

The project will combine patented technology and innovate/develop this prototype technology for use within the high growth European façade markets. It will demonstrate that the unique prototype technology is compatible to the major EU façade systems and also meets the performance expectations within new application opportunities.

Finally, a new manufacturing and production process will be developed, potentially creating foreground IP, that will enable this prototype technology to be scaled up to meet the EU façade market needs. This new manufacturing and production technology will also be offered to other global markets interested in developing low carbon construction materials.

The project consortium is nearly complete and includes:
- the proposer, a UK-based glass processing company active in the European construction industry
- a German-based chemical manufacturer
- a German based glass manufacturer

The consortium requires the addition of a production equipment manufacturer with expertise in industrial automation to ensure the development of a large scale commercial production process for a transparent honeycomb insulating material. The company should be based outside both the UK and Germany to balance the consortium.

The proposal will be submitted to the H2020-FTI Pilot-2015-1 (Fast Track to Innovation Pilot) with a deadline of 29 April 2015. The project is expected to last 2 years from project start to reaching full production capability. Funding awards for an FTI Pilot Project are at a rate of 70% of eligible project costs.

Expressions of Interest to be received by 10 March 2015.
