The Nova-Fab project will develop a Linear Friction Welding (LFW) manufacturing solution for the production of high strength, corrosion resistant Nickel bolts for extreme environments. They are looking for a manufacturer of high performance fasteners or innovative tensioning solutions to complete their project consortium.
Description:
The European oil -Y- gas industry currently faces extreme challenges retrieving resources from ever deeper and more severe deep sea environments. There is also growing demand for large fasteners and bolts from the off-shore wind generation sector where they are used in a range of critical joints and can cost £10-15K per turbine (Crown Estate). Nickel based bolts and fasteners, used to join various subsea piping and off-shore tower components, are a vital part of the infrastructure. They are also a critical area of uncertainty, with unexpected failures costing £millions in downtime, maintenance and lost production costs. For example, Nickel superalloy 718 (Ni718) bolts are used in numerous subsea and off-shore installations.

The Nova-Fab project will develop a Linear Friction Welding (LFW) manufacturing solution for the production of Nickel bolts, with a satisfactory quality and at a productivity which will enable considerable cost reduction and, consequently, market penetration. In addition, advanced nano-scale material characterisation will be developed to aid the production of "tailor-made" Nickel bolts for hazardous environment.

These components, which can have a diameter of M16 to M72, are currently entirely machined from billets or are hot press forged and final machined. These production methods are expensive, time consuming and create a lot of scrap material. LFW welds are completed in seconds, which benefits the lead times for made-to-order components. This approach can dramatically reduce the volume of raw material used and the extent of machining required in part production. LFW manufacture of high-performance materials can result in significant cost savings, time savings and associated environmental benefits (reduced scrap, clean welding solutions, etc.). The use of friction welding methods for manufacturing potentially allows the approach to be applied with no or minimal penalty to part performance, and at an economically attractive rate compared with high-productivity subtractive machine-tool technology.

An industrial partner (SME or LE) is required for an end user role to complete the project consortium.
