Description:
A UK engineering company with a track record in providing hydropower solutions is willing to build a consortium with the aim of developing a low cost pico (small) hydroelectric generator that generates up to 500W by harnessing power from high velocity, low head water in streams and rivers.
Conventional hydropower technologies are extremely capital intensive. They require substantial civil construction works to divert the flow of water into the hydropower device which itself is constructed from expensive materials and requires labour intensive processes. In many cases restricted access, difficulties transporting the equipment and the lack of roads has precluded any development; not least, existing hydropower solutions tend to affect negatively the local habitats. The proposed project wants to tackle this challenge by developing a low cost pico (small) hydroelectric generator that will harness power from high velocity, low head water in streams and rivers.
The project aims to devise a solution that requires minimal construction and setup works. Made of modular units, it can be sized to suit any site to optimise power output, and multiples of the product can be tethered in parallel or in series to generate more power. The power generating process involves neither an impoundment nor an abstraction, so it wouldn´t require environment authority consent nor planning permission in most locations. It will have no impact on aquatic life or habitat and will be able to operate throughout floods and droughts.
With simplicity of design and ease of shipping, assembly and installation, the device will have significant impacts in underdeveloped regions and developing countries where communities require consistent, reliable electricity supplies.
The company has carried out initial market opportunity research and rely on significant in-house engineering expertise. It looks forward to partnering with the following organisations that will assist with various stages of the project:
? Institute of Experimental Physics for assisting with the setup and testing of experiments and with building prototypes.
? A Polymer Processing and Manufacturing company to work with on the design of a product that is technically not too costly.
? Other engineering partners - companies or research institutes - for computer aided design (CAD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.

The project is being prepared for the H2020 LCE-07-2016-2017 call "Developing the next generation technologies of renewable electricity and heating/cooling" which closes on January 5th 2017.
The deadline for expressions of interest is October 1st 2016.
