H2020 - New strategy to valorise the deodorisation distillate from vegetable oil refinery
Summary:
Two laboratories of French research institutes are looking for industrial and research partners to develop a project aiming at valorising the deodorisation distillate (condensate) produced during the refinery process of vegetable oil.
Compentences are sought in the field of chemical engineering, polymers in particular
Description:
The two French laboratories in the field of bioeconomy are developing new concept of valorisation of by-products resulting from food industry processing.
The objective of this project named VALCOD is to bring together different entities to develop new technologies and processes dedicated to the valorisation of deodorisation condensates of vegetable oil (DCVO). Previous works have shown the great potentiel of using such deodorisation condensates in polymers.

In particular for bio-based polymers, the use of these by-products brings new properties and contributes to upgrade the low-value products into high value additives, while keeping the high "bio-based" content in the polymers.

The VALCOD project aims at developing a new valorisation strategy and validating it on polymers matrices whether bio-based or not.

Currently both partners have drawn up a project which could imply several stakeholders at different stages.
First stage : characterising and purifying the DVCO in order to create "building block" or additives.
Second stage : those ´block´ will be used and tested as additives for bio-based and petrol based polymers.
Different processes will be checked during the project. Compliance with EU regulation on Food Contact Material is one of the main issues. Some materials will need to be assessed and certified along the process.
