H2020-SMEINST-2-2015: EPIC - Electric propulsion with in-wheel motors for commercial vehicles
Summary:
Slovenian R&D oriented SME is writing a project proposal for the H2020-SMEINST-2-2015 call. The project aims to develop the most advanced electric propulsion with in-wheel motor technology for electric buses, trucks or delivery vehicles. They are searching for project partners among SMEs and industry in the fields of electronics, battery or other energy type developers, chassis with advanced materials development, system integrators, vehicle manufacturers or end users.
Description:
The core technology, in-wheel electric motors is already developed and tested on several electric and hybrid cars and other vehicles.

Slovenian company believes that vehicles can be designed and built in much better way as they are today. They want them to fit the needs of people or tasks they are designed to perform. They do not need all the robust mechanical transmission and they can use the advanced technologies to accomplish those goals.

The goal of the EPIC project is to provide the simple to integrate, energy efficient, light and environmentally friendly propulsion system solution for development of commercial vehicles with advanced architectures or for conversion of old commercial vehicles to electric propulsion. The ultimate goal is to develop the technologies, which will allow the mass production for electric commercial vehicles.

Project EPIC will make only the first step until 2018 and the development of the technology. The ongoing activities and orders for the advanced vehicles as well as possible private financing are planned for mass production to start. EPIC project will be developed with clear focus on the mass production goals in mind.

The technical targets for the EPIC solution:
· 3300 Nm of peak torque per motor.
· Peak energy efficiency of 95%, average energy efficiency in the driving cycle 88%
· Additional weight per wheel of under 120 kg (current solutions add up to 420kg of weight)
· Short integration time.

The vehicles and demonstrational objectives of the EPIC project are:
· Demonstrate the functionality, performance and safety of the EPIC 4 wheel, in-wheel drive system on one new sample commercial vehicle with 10 tons.
· Acquire legal certification for the newly developed EPIC components during the project
· Prepare a production plan for 10 commercial vehicles

From the technical perspective the solution is an advanced electric motor and inverter consisting of:
· Motor active part based on the three phase pseudo-helical solid slot multiple wave winding based on Slovenian company patents and mechanical design patents
· The exact decision of what inverters to use in the system is not completed. But there are several options.
· Motor housing with advanced technologies of die casting (integrated cooling channels for efficient heat sinks)
· Standard off-the-shelf bearing and brake components will be used for optimum safety and compactness. They will be selected based on FMEA, taking into account additional braking force provided by in-wheel motors and additional rigidity requirements due to in-wheel motors.
· If required, minor modifications will be done in rim design to specially fit for in-wheel motor project based on the in-wheel motor knowhow (larger ET, special design at high radius inner edges for allowing more space for the motor, advanced geometric properties for noise cancelation)
· Propulsion control unit for multiple motor-to-controller communication
· HMI system with tablet computer with application for intuitive control (reading and setting) of the propulsion system parameters.
· Highly compact liquid cooling system.

The project will start in December 2015 and will be completed in November 2018. The plan is to demonstrate it on the fully functional and tested show vehicle reaching TRL7 in 2016/2017 and plan for production in 2019.

The company is searching for SME and industry partners in the fields of electronics, battery or other energy type developers, chassis with advanced materials development, system integrators, vehicle manufacturers or end users.

Research cooperation agreement is offered.

The internal deadline for expressions of interest is 9th June 2015.
Advantages and Innovations:
The proposed electric vehicles with compact and powerful in-wheel propulsion will have superior efficiencies and lower weight.
Compared to other electric vehicles the expected increase of efficiency is approx. 15 %. This also means the battery can be 15% smaller and cheaper for the same range.
There are no constraints with mechanical parts when developing the chassis and interior can fit the needs of driver, passenger or load. The expected savings on weight are approximately 10% for the complete vehicle.
The company's existing in-wheel motor technology has over 30Nm/kg of specific torque and so far they have motors for passenger cars. The goal of this project is to scale it for the needs of larger vehicles.
Stage of Development:
Proposal under development
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The batteries they are interested in should have close to 200Wh/kg specific capacity. The chassis are expected to be lightweight. For the exact vehicle type they are relatively flexible, but in general they want to solve the challenges of the drivetrain for vehicles heavier than 5 tons.
IPR Status:
Secret Know-how,Patent(s) applied for but not yet granted,Patents granted,Trade Marks
Comments Regarding IPR Status:
The basic in-wheel motor technology is already well protected. All results that will be generated during the project will be owned by the partner who will develop it as it is a general advise for H2020 project. Exploitation of results will require royalties according to the fair agreements.
