Summary:
Hungarian digital health IT SME has developed a digital health support application to support chronic patients with kidney problems or diabetes. The application also supports the work dietitians/doctors. The company seeks a German clinical partner to adapt the application for the German health community (digitalisation challenge in nutritional support) and get ready for "App aus Rezept" status. The consortium would apply for "Customised Solution Innovation Voucher" of Digi-B-Cube´s Open Call.
Description:
The Hungarian digital health tech company is seeking a German clinical partner to apply in consortium for Digi-B-Cube open call "Customised Solution Innovation Voucher" to offer solution for a digitalisation challenge in chronic care, monitoring and nutritional support of diabetes/kidney disease patients and patients with obesity.

Germany supports digital health innovations with new regulatory environment, enabling "App aus Rezept" status. Such applications can be provided as part of treatment and care, upon prescription.

Patients with obesity, diabetes and kidney problems are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus infection, therefore safe, remote, digital health support is essential for this group, while prevention is more important than before.

The importance of proper nutrition/life style in chronic care (diabetes and/or kidney failure) as well as in strenghtening resilience against life-threating conditions related to COVID-19 infection has been recently proven by many studies and research projects.

Therefore, main purpose of the proposed project is to:
- support health institutions in digital transformation
- support dietetians and doctors working in chronic care (diabetes/Chronic Kidney Disease) or with obese patients,
- provide relevant, personalised and validated medical and nutritional dietary content for patients and
- enable digital health application to conform/comply with the "App aus Rezept" status.

The coordinator in the proposed project is the Hungarian SME which developed this digital health application, already having contacts in Germany. They have the technical expertise and knowledge to use AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) in this Digital Health app (TRL8) which supports users to autogenerate optimal menus, analyse health data and get personalised advice.

About the call and the funding opportunity:
Digi-B-Cube funds European SMEs for joint projects in the sectors of healthcare / medicine / biotech / biopharma and IT (also robotics, automation, electronics, nanotech, etc). The scheme is to support (at least) 2 European SMEs to address a digitalization challenge in the Medical Diagnostics and related value chains.

The project duration is minimum 2 months, maximum 6 months (duration of the proposed project is 3-6 months).

The Hungarian SME has also experience in participating or managing various grant-funded projects. Experience includes successful participation in a H2020 project and having SME Instrument Seal-of-Excellence for project concept of this product.

Key expectations towards / characteristics of German partner:
· Private health provider with focus on diabetes, endocrinology, nutrition, CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) or obesity, with relevant patient base
· Interest in digital transformation, telehealth and telecare to enhance patient engagement, experience and safety
· Offering ongoing support for patients with the above conditions, including professional nutritional and life style advice and coaching
· Ready to input medical content, nutritional information/recipes and patient education material which can then be digitally delivered to the patient in a personalised manner
· Has the necessary clinical experience to analyse and validate patient data and results
· Has core digital infrastructure to integrate new telecare applications in patient care
· Key role of partner is to provide medical/nutritional expertise, additional clinical/nutritional content, and to contribute to actions which lead to "App aus Rezept" status.

EOI deadline is 30 June 2020. Final deadline of call application is 29 July 2020.
The Hungarian SME has a business development partner (non-medical) in Germany to support collaboration and completion of application (but will not be part of the consortium).
Advantages and Innovations:
The core product is an AI-supported software application designed to support daily digital health management of patients with chronic conditions like kidney diseases and/or diabetes, enabling dietitians and medical staff to guide and monitor status and habits online, provide automated but personalised patient education/dietary support using a safe, virtual/remote channel.

Patients receive personalised support to achieve their dietary goals, make adequate changes in daily activity and behaviour patterns while medical professionals have a patient education tool and evidence-based feedback about the patient´s condition.

The digital health application uses validated medical content and validated nutritional information to provide patient education, life style guidance and direct menu planning.

The application addresses multiple chronic conditions, user preferences and lifestyle goals by using AI/ ML to optimise the user experience. This can be particularly important with kidney patients with obesity, diabetes and food intolerances, while the application also considers activity habits, specific limits (eg. physical disabilities) and personal preferences. It can go ´deep´ as well as ´broad´ in how it captures data and preferences around specific conditions, such as strengthening immune system to avoid/combat Covid-19.

Rather than use multiple apps to manage multiple conditions from a nutritional perspective, which fragments patient information and acts as a barrier to uptake - patients need only one application to manage them all. Unlike "self-help" applications, direct involvement of dietitians, nutritionists and health specialists is also supported.
