A Spanish research institution is involved in a M-ERA.NET project that has already passed the pre-proposal stage and now goes for the full-proposal (deadline: 10th November). The project aims to design new packaging materials to enhance package safety and preserve the quality of the food products. A company with experience in plastic production for food packaging applications is sought to carry out the production, pilot scale production and validation of the novel materials.
Description:
Packaging global market will surpass -Y-euro;5 billion in the near future, with an anticipated growth for food packaging demand due to consumption of pre-processed food. Food packaging must ensure preservation and safe distribution of food products to the final consumer, avoiding biological, chemical, as well as physical deterioration. Active, intelligent and smart materials are receiving increased attention from the academic and industry packaging community, where active means the material has functions beyond inert passive containment and protection, while intelligent and smart involve the ability to sense or measure an attribute of the product or inner atmosphere that can be used to trigger active packaging functions. Currently, research on food packaging is centred on the replacement of macro- or micro-active compounds by nano-sized ones combined with replacement of oil-based materials by bio-based ones.

The present proposal (starting in Technology Readiness Level 2) addresses the development of a new generation of active, intelligent and smart bio-based food film packaging materials through dispersion of nano-sized oxygen scavengers in a polymeric matrix. Enhanced oxygen absorption capacity, as well as high absorption kinetics are achieved by alloying Fe (iron) and Zn (zinc) nanoparticles to exploit the larger reduction potential of Fe and induce a controlled oxidation of Zn through consumption of oxygen and water present in -or permeating through- the package material.

Thus, a suitable material design can be used to enhance package safety and preserve the quality of the food products by e.g. reducing nutrient loss, discoloration, microbial spoilage, rancidity, off-flavour, and organoleptic deterioration. This study will set the bases for emerging coating technologies in the field of food packaging; (i) magnetron sputtering and (ii) electrospinning, as well as strengthen well known technologies in the industry. The project opens also interesting perspectives for other industrial applications of active (e.g. scavenging and antimicrobial) and intelligent (e.g. chromic sensors) devices and will be validated by the current companies involved in the project (Technology Readiness Level 5).

The proposal has already passed the pre-proposal stage and now goes for the full-proposal of M-ERA.NET Call 2015 (deadline 10th November). The consortium is looking for a company with experience in plastic production for food packaging applications, interested on smart and intelligent packaging development, including oxygen scavenging, oxygen sensors and antibacterial capabilities.

The general role of the company in the project (as stated in the project) would be:
1. Production of master batch of PLA pellets with embedded nanoparticles provided by one of the partners.
2. Production of PLA films with embedded nanoparticles by extrusion from the master batch at laboratory level.
3. Pilot scale production of PLA packaging with embedded nanoparticles by extrusion.
4. To participate/provide support in the validation of the product (other partners are involved in this task too).

Since the call closes the 10th of November, the deadline for EOIs is 30th October. The budget will depend on the national funding organization in each country.
