The project aims at the development of a novel smart surface that is capable of providing multi sensing capabilities to a variety of high added value consumer goods at a single stage, avoiding the assembly of bulky sensors into products. The team seeks smart furniture manufacturers, academic partners, design consulting firms and IT experts for development, demonstration.
Description:
The project is aims at the creation of a smart surface material platform for designers who are interested in entering the Internet of Things (IoT) era based on latest nanoinks printing and laser processing developments. This project will enable a new alternative for sensor integration for internet connected products by printing sensors (sensor primitives) for Internet of Things devices over their surfaces. While the traditional sensor placement process for products has to place each sensor separately in the product, smart skin project approach is providing an alternative route to place the sensing capabilities on top of the product envelope/casing. Such approach has numerous innovation advantages which will enable context aware and invisible user interfaces. Additionally, this approach may minimize the costs, improve aesthetics and environmental impacts of products.
In comparison with traditional sensor placement processes where each sensor has to be placed separately, the smart skin technology is providing a new plastic and paper coating that provide sensing capabilities to the product without any additional assembly or sensors.
Recent developments on nanoink printing has enabled the precise printing of conductive elements on organic surfaces such as paper or plastic. While the results of these developments are robust and have potential for many applications, the design practitioners, entrepreneurs and new product developers have not yet realized the potential of these new processes.
As a sensor enabler, smart skin project aims to provide a single solution for multi sensing capabilities by only using one material coating.
The innovation of the smart skin technology is the use of Nano-manufacturing technique in order to skip the assembly of bulky sensors into products. We integrate variety of sensors in transparent coating over the material surface substituting the existing market propositions

The design expert should have experience and interest in designing interfaces for products and designing products in Internet of things domain. -IT consultants with expertise in developing solutions and integrating systems for Internet of Things applications.
