Un instituto macedonio de investigación en medioambiente, ingeniería civil y energía está desarrollando un proyecto dentro de la convocatoria CIRC- 02- 2016-2017: Agua en el contexto de la economía circular, parte b) Hacia la próxima generación de sistemas y servicios de agua - grandes proyectos de demostración (2017). El objetivo es probar un nuevo modelo de servicios de tratamiento de aguas residuales que incluya un enfoque integrado tecnológico y de gestión para circuitos cerrados de agua, energía y materiales. La fecha límite de la convocatoria es el 7 de marzo de 2017 y el plazo para presentar expresiones de interés finaliza el 15 de febrero.

Summary:
A Macedonian Institute for research in Environment, Civil Engineering and Energy is developing a project under CIRC- 02- 2016-2017: Water in circular economy, part b) Towards the next generation of water systems and services - large scale demonstration projects (2017). The Project aims to pilot an innovative model of wastewater treatment services, comprising integrated technological and managerial approach for water, energy and materials closed loops.
Description:
The Project aims to pilot an innovative model of wastewater treatment services, comprising integrated technological and managerial approach for water, energy and materials closed loops, in wastewater treatment plants located in urban areas. The Project will be implemented in a large scale, in several cities that will be selected in accordance with representativeness criteria, at different locations and of various size of population, in new as well as existing WWTPs for communal and industrial wastewater.
The novelty is in complexity of technological solution, based on integration and optimization of all applicable methods of feasible use of closed-loops technologies (e.g., water recycling and reuse, residuals from treatment process use, heat and energy generation, etc.). The Project will encompass integral technological solutions, compatible to each other and adjusted to the site conditions (location, size, loading, market, etc.). A methodological approach of optimization, supported by an appropriate software tool, will be demonstrated, intended for future designing and optimization of water, material and energy closed loops systems in wastewater treatment plants. In addition, an appropriate model for management of the plant will be demonstrated, forming an integral part of the new established circular economy system of the water services for WWWTs management and operation.
Objectives:
- Application, piloting and testing of an integrated and innovative model developed in the various fields of water reuse and recycling, wastewater treatment, including recovery of resources and water-energy nexus technologies,
- Confirmation of economic and environmental viability and feasibility of circular economy technological solutions in urban wastewater treatment plants,
- Development of water sector services up to the state suitable to future role and challenges;
- Identification of possible synergies among communal, municipal and industrial entities (water, energy, recovered materials producers, operators and users);
- Decrease of primary material, water and energy consumption, leading to smart approach of efficient resource management.
Innovation focus:
The Project innovation focus will be set on integration and optimization of several technological fields encompassing usage of: treated and untreated water for water supply of industry and communal needs, treatment process residuals, generation of heat, electricity and materials for industry. Optimization will be carried out considering all relevant aspects: environmental, financial, technological, resource efficiency, social, managerial, etc., in order to provide maximum benefits from wastewater and treated water, in line with the circular economy approach. The Project pilot will represent an optimized composition of the applicable technologies.

- Communication and networking of stakeholders,
- Workshops, seminars, training for the Project promotion,
- Development of design for selected technical solutions,
- Installation of technological equipment and putting in operation,
- Monitoring of the plant trial work
- Development of IT platform,
- Development of methodological tool and applicable software,
- Demonstration of new management model of water services.
The Institute has been negotiating for partnership with institutions from EU countries that are specialized for research projects in water sector. It is now looking for coordinator and additional partnerships that are:
- Water utilities,
- User communities,
- Industry for development of technological solutions for WWT plants,
- IT experts for tailor-made software,
- Institutions for research specialized for wastewater technologies, as well as for mathematical and numerical modelling of processes,
- Entities having experience with application of water circular economy solutions.

Partner Sought:
The Institute is looking for R-Y-D institutions, designers and manufacturers of technological equipment applicable for the described project concept and purpose, as well as universities and SMEs that have experience in research projects. The partners sought should have relevant experience, as well as potential and interest for sharing the project objective and innovation focus and for making a significant contribution to reaching the project goals. The coordinating partner needs to have adequate experience in related research field, running and leading of similar projects and a wide contact network that can be used for further development of the project team. The prospective partners are encouraged to submit proposals for further development of the project concept.
