Eurostars project: Looking for a company active in the manufacturing of specific equipment for agricultural and life sciences applications
Summary:
A Dutch SME is looking for a company to complete an Eurostars consortium. The project targets potato farmers and the use of chemicals to prevent sprouting in potatoes. The requested partner should be active in manufacturing real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) equipment which is used to analyse samples containing Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). The partner should be able to develop a hand held device or small mobile lab for analysis, so test results are quickly on site.
Description:
A Dutch SME develops molecular tests for the agrofood sector and provides services and applications in the area of gene activity profiling for product quality control and agricultural R-Y-D. The company has a worldwide sales and services network and has patents and expertise at the interface between plant physiology, molecular biology and agricultural production chains. The SME is a spin-off from Wageningen University since 2006.

The Dutch SME is active in the development of highly accurate tests by selecting genes that are responsible for the specific quality trait in crops of interest. Changes in the activity of those specific genes can be measured before any phenotypical changes become visible on the outside. The Dutch SME is able to select, out of thousands of active genes, those genes related to specific developmental characteristics or that reflect the efficacy of certain treatments. Detection of such early events is not possible with traditional methods. Once relevant genes have been selected, the company is able to develop highly accurate and user friendly tests. Analysis of samples is performed by using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). At this moment, the analysis of a given sample has to be performed in a laboratory. Depending on the place of origin, it may take several days before the sample arrives in the laboratory. A solution that enables e.g. farmer to perform test onsite, would increase the market enormously.

PROJECT DISCRIPTION:
For the new Eurostars call of February 2016 the Dutch SME works together with an UK R-Y-D company to set up a project targeting potato farmers and the use of chemicals to prevent sprouting in the potatoes. The Dutch and UK company are working on a test to measure more precisely if and when the use of chemicals is needed and how much is needed also. The recurrence of the use of chemicals and preferably using biological chemicals (instead of the now used non-biological chemicals) is looked into. A mobile lab or handheld device would certainly take away practical barriers to use the test once it has been developed.

CONSORTIUM:
The Dutch and UK companies are looking for a specific partner to compete the consortium for this Eurostars project. The requested partner should be active in the manufacturing of equipment to analyse samples containing RNA e.g. real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) devices, and should be interested to develop this into a hand held device or small mobile lab which can be used to perform the tests as mentioned.

This Eurostars project could fit perfectly with the trend of using less chemicals in the agrofood area concerning healthcare and taking into account new legislation on the use of chemicals/pesticides in the EU.

Eurostars is a joint program between EUREKA and the European Commission, co-funded from the national budgets of 34 Eurostars Participating States and Partner Countries and by the European Union through Horizon 2020. In the 2014-2020 period it has a total public budget of -Y-euro;1.14 billion. The role of SMEs for the economy has never been so important. Eurostars aims to bring increased value to the economy, higher growth and more job opportunities.

DEADLINE FOR THE CALL:18 February 2016

DEADLINE FOR EOIs: 15 January 2016
Advantages and Innovations:
The advantage of a handheld device or mobile lab is enormous. It will reduce time between sampling and result, it will reduce costs, it will make the tests even more user friendly and will provide customer the idea of being in control. It all adds to a huge increase of market potential.

Partner sought

Partner Sought:
The requested partner should be active in the manufacturing of equipment to analyse samples containing RNA e.g. real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) devices, and should be interested to develop this into a hand held device or small mobile lab which can be used to perform the tests on site. The requested partner is preferably active or interested in the agricultural chain. However, a partner active in human life sciences will not be excluded on beforehand.
