Específicamente buscan un proveedor de un compresor ensamblado/turbina que opere a temperaturas inferiores a -100º C. La unidad será instalada en un nuevo sistema de congelación de alimentos. El socio contribuirá al desarrollo del sistema (rendimiento del hardware). La fecha límite de la convocatoria es el 17 de marzo de 2016 y el plazo para presentar expresiones de interés finaliza el 11 de marzo.

Summary:
Two Italian SMEs active in the field of low temperature systems, together with the University of Torino, are looking for a partner for a Manunet project who should supply an assembled compressor/turbine with the turbine operating at temperatures < -100°C. The unit will be installed on the rig of an innovative food freezing system. The partner shall contribute to the development of the system as regards to the behaviour of its hardware.
Description:
The freezing temperature of the food is generally comprised between -30 and -50 ° C; in conventional plants it is achieved by single-stage or two-stages vapor cycles employing as refrigerants HFCs and / or ammonia. When lower temperatures are required (even less than -100 ° C), liquid nitrogen vaporization is used. This technique is rather expensive due to the production and logistic costs of liquid nitrogen.
However, very low freezing temperatures allow a rapid freezing process which ensures the best preservation of organoleptic and nutritional properties of food. When applying rapid cooling to food, the water quickly turns into minute ice crystals. If the cooling process is slow, the crystals tend to agglomerate, growing in size and causing mechanical damage to the walls of cell membranes; this causes, after thawing, the loss of turgidity and food nutrients. If the freezing process is very fast, once thawed, the product will be very similar to the fresh product in terms of structure and nutritional and organoleptic properties.
Recently, some important theoretical and experimental studies performed using airborne hardware, have put in evidence that air cycles, typically used in the conditioning of aircraft, suitably recalibrated, can enable achievement of temperatures lower than -100°C with energy consumption lower than the liquid nitrogen evaporation which presently is the only technology allowing so low temperatures. On the other end, such experiments have shown that the airborne components are not optimized nether suitable for the food freezing application.
Such air cycle is very similar to the one of an air conditioning system.
The partner sought should be active in the design and manufacturing of small gas turbines and compressors (power range 18 kW) in order to supply the turbo/compressor assembly (bootstrap type) according to an agreed specification.

The assembly will be installed in an innovative food freezing system. The partner should contribute to the development of the system, taking care of the optimization of the performance of the turbo/compressor in the frame of the system.
