Un equipo de investigación español ha desarrollado un método para producir xerogel orgánico, que actúa como absorbente. Este gel se caracteriza por su capacidad de retención de humedad y por una velocidad de adsorción superior a la de otros absorbentes comunes. Los xerogeles son geles secos que actúan por adsorción, cuyo proceso de fabricación garantiza una porosidad mínima del 60% (el doble que el gel de sílice) y una alta concentración de oxígeno en la superficie (alrededor del 25%), propiedades que garantizan una buena deshidratación. El equipo de investigación busca socios en la industria química interesados en colaborar mediante un acuerdo de licencia de patente.

Industrial partners from chemical industries are being sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement.
Description:
Desiccants¿ market has remained stable during last years. However, some elements don¿t escape from traditional problems like a low resistance to acidity, or a slow desiccation speed. In this context, organic xerogels have the capacity to fulfill those gaps.

Xerogels are dry gels that act through adsorption, whose manufacturing process ensures a minimum porosity of 60% (twice than silica gel) and a high surface oxygen concentration (above 25%), properties that guarantee a good desiccation.

Manufacturing process begins with a polymerization carried out using microwave systems, followed by a post treatment that uses air to achieve a complete desiccation. Both processes happen at temperatures around 100ºC and at environmental pressure levels.
Advantages and Innovations:
¿ Its desiccation speed and adsorption capacity is twice higher than silica gel¿´s (reference desiccator).

¿ Its properties (pore volume and size) are easily adaptable with a change in the proportions of reagents, and its manufacturing process is faster than silica gel´¿s.

¿ It has a high processing capacity that allows its application in different uses and sizes (monolithic, granular, powder¿) without modifying its manufacturing process or chemical composition.

¿ High resistance to acidity, and good adsorption capacity at low pH environments without modifying their chemical properties (any byproduct is generated).

¿ It can be used in the same fields than silica gel, and even on further applications. Ex: textile industry, food conservation, chemical industry, logistics and transport, electronics, paper industry, inks, moisture control on gases¿...
