Natural essential oils protecting cosmetics from spoilage are offered under license agreement
Summary:
A scientist from North-West Poland has developed a natural essential oil from lavender that can be applied in the cosmetics industry as a alternative to synthetic preservatives added to cosmetic products. On top of great antibacterial properties it also has a good impact on skin condition.
The scientist is looking for partners who would be interested in implementation of the offered solution in the production process, under a license agreement. Technical support will be provided.
Description:
A Polish scientist has developed technology to extract lavender essential oil that can be applicable in the cosmetics industry as natural preservative.

A synthetic preservative, phenoxyethanol, commonly used in cosmetics has negative impact on human skin. Researches indicate that it also results in potential mutagenic, causing changes in mouse chromosomes. The same negative impact on human health has benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid also used as preservatives in cosmetic industry. The first one is a natural substance produced by plants, whereas in cosmetic production generally synthetic form of it is used. All the above-mentioned preservatives are approved by the FDA in the United States (Food and Drug Administration) and by the European Union (EC Regulation 1223/2009) however these may not exceed 1% by volume of the product for phenoxyethanol and benzyl alcohol and 0.6% for dehydroacetic acid. Another substance that might be questionable are parabens which are esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Previous studies show that parabens accumulate in the human body and may cause breast cancer.

Nowadays, more and more companies introduce paraben-free cosmetic product lines or generally cosmetics with no preservatives. But these have very short shelf life and have to be kept in the fridge. These cosmetics are also much more expensive than other products on the market. As the fact that it´s shelf life is quite short (several weeks) clients are not able to end it up. Application of the developed natural emulsion would extend shelf life from mentioned several weeks to few months.

The cosmetic emulsion is a natural preservative in a form of an essential oil obtained from lavender which has been propagated in in vitro tissue culture.

In natural circumstances, essential oils are produced by plants in very small quantities but by in vitro method allows to propagate lavender plants throughout the whole year, regardless of the climate and soil conditions.

Application of the emulsion in cosmetic industry allows to prevent spoilage of cosmetics and multiplication of microorganisms. Moreover it has very positive impact on human skin as a stimulator to collagen production so it has anti-aging properties.

The scientist is looking for cosmetic manufacturers who are interested in technology implementation under license agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
The offered essential oils protect cosmetics against spoilage. After using the final product for a long time, the microorganisms do not develop its resistance to antibacterial properties of essential oils as it is in case of synthetic preservatives. It also has no negative impact on human body. What is more, it stimulates cells to collagen production what makes skin looking better.
Stage of Development:
Available for demonstration
IPs:
Patent(s) applied for but not yet granted
CommeR Statunts Regarding IPR Status:
Polish and European patents pending.
