Summary:
A Dutch SME is offering a non-invasive analysis for monitoring composition of cells from various origin. The analysis allows monitoring of the growth/harvesting moment, screening of new sources for biologically active compounds, characterization of chemical composition and or optimizing biorefinary/bioprocessing. The SME is looking for companies/universities active in food or nutrition for services or licensing agreemeents to solve screening, quality control or bioprocessing needs.
Description:
This Dutch SME in partnership with another SME and Universities has developed an Infrared Attenuated Total Reflection (IR ATR) spectroscopic method combined with Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression for the simultaneous quantitative analysis of total protein, lipid and fatty acids in algae biomass. The developed multiple-species model is developed for 30 algae species and can be used to screen a large number of algae. The method allows making fast choice of the algae species rich in either proteins, lipids or carbohydrates dependent on the aim of the further processing of the biomass and isolation of specific biochemicals. Large differences in biomass composition can be observed between the various algae species grown/cultured in various conditions that allows further preparation of chemicals from the specific algae.

Protein content as determined by ATR spectroscopy correlated well with the results obtained from elemental analysis and the lipid and fatty acids content correlated well with the results of gravimetric and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods accordingly.

The SME offers to perform the analyses within R-Y-D projects on the basis of a services agreement charging a fee for services rendered. The SME also offers an agreement in the framework of licensing to companies or governmental organisations with experience of spectroscopic methods. The principles of methodology could be applicable to other prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Within the partnership the method could be optimised for e.g. bacteria, yeast, mammalian cell lines. In these cases the SME offers validation or a pilot project before licensing.
Advantages and Innovations:
The ATR screening method facilitates and speeds up selection for biomolecules of nutritional interest, such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and fatty acids. Moreover it allows selection of the source rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which is of interest for various biochemical applications.
