Investigadores de una empresa argentina han desarrollado una tecnología de aptámeros que reconocen la proteína básica de mielina (MBP) y sirven como agentes neuroprotectores en pacientes con esclerosis múltiple. La tecnología también puede emplearse como herramienta de diagnóstico para la detección de MBP. Los aptámeros son oligonucleótidos que se unen a una molécula específica y son más estables a temperatura ambiente. Estas moléculas se aíslan, seleccionan y modifican fácilmente durante la síntesis química para resistir el efecto de varias enzimas o personalizar determinadas funcionalidades (estabilidad en solución salina, permitiendo cruzar la barrera hematoencefálica). Se buscan licenciatarios para finalizar el desarrollo del diagnóstico o tratamiento y difundir la tecnología en otras regiones.

CONICET´s researchs have developed a new interesting technology. Aptamers are oligonucleotide molecules that bind to a specific target molecule. The present invention recognizes the Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) and serve as neuroprotective agents or diagnostic tools for detection of MBP.
CONICET is currently looking for licensed partners to finish diagnostic or treatment development and spread this technology to new regions.
Description:
The present invention provides aptamers that recognize the Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) and serve as neuroprotective agents in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In addition, it can be used as a diagnostic tool for the detection of MBP. These aptamers can be DNA or single chain RNA. They block the bonding of autoantibodies to the MBP, thus interrupting the recruitment of inflammatory cells and the degradation of the MBP.
It is also a capibility of the research group to provide aptamers against other molecules of interest.

Applications:
· Detection of Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) with diagnostic and tracking purposes.
· Neuron protective agent against the loss and axonal damage in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Advantages and Innovations:
In comparison to antibodies, or other similar tools, for tretament or disease diagnosis, aptamers are:
· More stable at room temperature.
· Not immunogenic.
· Easily isolated, selected and modified during chemical synthesis to resist the effect of various enzymes or to personalize certain functionalities (stability in saline solution, enable crossing of the blood-brain barrier).
· Bond both small molecules and complex multimeric structures.
· Low production cost.
· Ability to inactivate proteins, without altering the genetic material.
· Their small size allow them to enter tissues and to bond to target molecules.
· Possible to associate or conjugate them to chemical groups such as cytotoxic or fluorophore agents.
· High reproducibility among production lots.
