A Turkish academician has developed and patented high speed packet lookup architecture for internet core routers. The invention provides high speed option to the internet protocol (IP) packet processing time in core routers.

The growth of the number of hosts on Internet, the transition from IP version 4 (IPv4) to IP version 6 (IPv6) addressing scheme and the increase in fiber optic line speeds force network vendors to produce powerful forwarding engines that can operate at line data rates in IPv6 and can cope with increasing number of routing table entries.

The main 5 advantages that the invention provides can be briefly described as:

1. High speed rates where 1 Terabit per second (Tbps) throughput rate is achieved.
2. Low delays were the average search delay is about 7 nano second per packet
3. IPv6 support: Any prefix tree in IPv6 can be mapped on the architecture.
4. Modular extendibility: The number of PEs can be increased for more performance
5. Fast updates: Supports incremental routing table updates.

The technical features behind the innovation can be listed as:

*Static random access memory (SRAM) based systolic architecture employs multiple pipelines that improve search throughput.

*Each processing element (PE) including an SRAM, first in first out queue and match logic is organized in a two dimensional circular structure that remove length limit in pipelines and provide memory balance on SRAMs. Hence the design supports any kind of prefix tree both in internet protocol v4 and v6.
