The university setup, based in Singapore specialises in design and technology development.

In this smart sound sensing solution, each sensor has a wireless module that communicates with user´s mobile device, notifying them of any sound events that the sensor detects. A log of sound activities can be stored on the mobile device, and later retrieved for trend monitoring. Users can configure sensors from their mobile device, such as changing its sensitivity and detection mode.

The key features of the technology are as follows:
- Remote sound monitoring wireless sensors that detect sound and send notifications to a remote user on their mobile device
- Data logging features to enable users to monitor trends over periods of time
- Re­deployable, re­configurable wireless sensors
- A reusable adhesive on the device´s outer casing enables sensors to be easily attached and detached from objects.
- Multiple sensors can be spatially reconfigurable anytime anywhere
- Low-level signal processing
- Sensors can be reconfigured with different sensitivity
- Tunable digital filters allows for customized detection of selected sounds. Background noise reduction algorithms can be implemented to reduce false alarms

The current prototype has the following specification:
- MEMS microphone with tunable amplifier for sound reception
- Arm Cortex M3 microcontroller with integrated signal processing capabilities
- Various wireless connectivity options (Bluetooth, WiFi/Zigbee, Sub-1GHz) can be customized for different applications
- Rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery

Assistive Technology
This would be a tool to enable people with hearing impairments to be aware of various sound events occurring in their living and working spaces. For example, being aware of someone knocking on the door, fire alarms, baby crying, etc.

Industrial Monitoring
Many machines provide some kind of near proximity visual or auditory feedback to an operator indicating its various states. The technology can seamlessly integrate into existing machine systems to detect/monitor specific sounds which can be indication of fault, or end of cycle, etc., in which operators can be remotely informed of such events.

Security and Defence
The distributed networking capability of the system and its low cost, makes it ideal for mass deployment in large areas. Its small size allows for strategic deployments for intruder detection and tracking.

The innovation of this technology is in its design and technology. It is designed such that non-technical end-user could easily configure it according to their application requirements and deploy it. The technology innovation lies it is ability to detect and recognize sound event with low-level of signal processing making it possible to be battery operated.
