Description:
A research group from a well-known Spanish University has developed a system for the detection of human presence in a wide range of spaces using computer vision techniques. By automatically analysing images recorded by different cameras, the system is able to calculate the number of people appearing in a certain image, their position and trajectory (through temporal integration), all without human intervention.

For the advanced functioning of the system, the research group has developed several algorithms for visible spectrum cameras and far infrared cameras, where the heat emitted by the objects is analysed. Therefore, the detection does not depend on the clothes, activity, movement or appearance of the people present in the images or the presence of other objects.
The system can be monocular or stereo.

The range of applications is very wide, from indoor to outdoor environments. The proposed but not limited use cases are:
- Surveillance system for intrusion detection.
- Driver assistance system for pedestrian detection.
- People detection in aerial images using on-board cameras on aeroplanes.

Therefore, the University is currently looking for companies in the security and surveillance systems, driver assistance systems or aerial image analysis sectors. The ideal partner would be interested in developing and testing the final prototype by means of a financial agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
This technical solution for automatically detecting people using computer vision techniques can be used:

1. For indoor and/or outdoor interior and/or exterior environments

2. Under nocturnal or daylight conditions

3. For the visible and the far infrared spectrum

4. Using monocular or stereo vision systems

5. Independently of the age, clothes, activity, movement or appearance of the people present in the images and the presence of other type of objects.

The main advantage of the developed system is that it does not require the presence of a human operator for the supervision of the sensorial information recorded by the cameras.
