Membrane constructions offer various possibilities for energy efficient refurbishment and new building constructions e.g. the material itself combines several valuable properties for buildings, such as translucence and thermal insulation, in one material. This means that the utilization of daylight through the membrane allows savings in energy consumption of artificial lighting, while at the same time a thermal insulation is provided. Consequentially many design opportunities, such as roofings of inner courtyards, with focus on indoor comfort, arise. Membrane constructions also lead to resource savings through a low material consumption especially in roof structures compared to metal or glass coverings.

A German research center specialised in integral architecture, is working interdisciplinary in fields of energy efficient building and refurbishments and sustainable architecture, participated in several projects about membrane constructions for energy and resource efficient refurbishment, e.g. about the roof of a gymnasium with focus on energy saving, natural lighting through translucent membrane, indoor comfort and resistance.
The centre is also working on advancements of membrane construction concepts and components, e.g. on topics covering solar control and testing reshaping and print possibilities. The centre is also offering research expertise for membranes incl. development of composite materials, optimization concerning thermal and optical characteristics, sun shading mechanism (spatial shaping, adhesive labels).
