Details

Tittle:
A high-energy lead-acid battery with active material deposited on reticulated vitreous carbon.
Summary:
A Polish R-Y-D organization is one of the largest chemical research entities in Poland. The company developed relates to a new high-energy lead-acid battery with active material deposited on reticulated vitreous carbon (Carbon Lead Acid Battery - CLAB).
The company is looking for a industrial partners that would implement above mentioned technology within the framework of commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
Regarding to the developed technology even though a new electrochemical sources of energy are available, for instance, lithium or hydride cells, the lead acid batteries continue to constitute a large share in the market simply because of their attractive price. Data indicate that the cost of production of 1 Wh - (the watt-hour ) power output is nearly three times as low for LAB - (Lead-Acid Batteries), in comparison with the Li-ion batteries - the most popular type of batteries in the market.
Therefore, the major objective of the manufacturers of lead-acid batteries is to improve their power output and capacity. The answer is the new high- energy lead-acid battery with active material deposited on reticulated vitreous carbon. The use of RVC - (reticulated vitreous carbon) as carrier of active material has much reduced the battery weight, leading to some 50% more specific energy (Wh/kg). A 20-hr discharging of a CLAB - (Carbon LeadAcid Battery with discharging current results in its specific energy of more than 170 Ah/kg -(ampere hours per kilogram) of negative active material.
The generally acceptable standard value is approx. 150 Ah/kg which indicates an increase by more than 10% in the capacity of the negative plate. This leads to an additional increase in the capacity. According to forecasts, the costs of 1 kWh in the new CLAB will be 15-20% lower, compared with the conventional battery. Owing to the new materials, the specific energy of the new battery is comparable to that of the nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery which is much more expensive and more toxic due to its cadmium content.
This is worth noting in the aspect of the EU policy banning Ni-Cd batteries in cordless power tools as of 2017 which, it is speculated, could be a first step to the taking over part of the CLAB market. Introduction of the RVC matrix to replace the lead grid reduces the consumption of lead (ab. 50g/Ah) which means that roughly 3 kg of lead will be saved in making a 60 Ah battery. Given the annual production of 5.5 mln pcs, savings may amount to a dozen or so thousand tons of Pb -(lead).
Lower consumption of lead will also help reduce the cost of recycling, thus contributing directly to reduction of the battery price.
The company is looking for experienced industrial partners among companies involved in i.e. production of electrochemical sources of energy to establish commercial agreement with technical assistance to implement the technology in question.
Advantages and Innovations:
Technology used at the Lead-Acid Batteries (LAB) and Advanced Lead-Acid Batteries (ALAB) makes then are much more effective than convestional solutions in supporting renewable energy sources, such as solar systems or wind power plants, power packs for portable equipment, wheelchairs, electric bikes or electric vehicles which are becoming more and more popular nowadays. The renewable energy industry seems to be an interesting area of application, and the global market of energy storage has considerable dynamics in its growth. According to recent forecasts, its value will be 4 thousand million US dollars in 2024. This indicates huge potential for the technology.
