Future electricity grids will need to incorporate increasing amounts of energy storage to cope with intermittent renewable generation. Centralised battery storage is just one way of doing this but there are still significant integration challenges and technical and commercial hurdles to overcome as well as new possibilities that have not been fully explored. This UK university jointly owns a research facility that incorporates a two megawatt lithium titanate battery, the largest of its kind in the UK. This opens up a number of possibilities for collaboration with partners such as electricity destribution companies, distribution equipment manufacturers, battery manufacturers, vehicle to grid (V2G) developers and finance of commercial projects. The university is looking to maximise the research that is carried out at the facility through technical cooperation or research agreements. The university is also looking for EU funded collaborative research projects that requires this kind of facility.
Advantages and Innovations:
The battery is grid-connected at an 11kV facility along with a 2MW ABB inverter and can for example, investigate the effects of centralised energy storage on the grid with experiments into response times for fast frequency response and other grid support functions. The facility can test new inverters with the existing battery pack and grid interface or alternatively, test new battery technologies with the existing inverters. This provides an unprecedented 2MW ´laboratory´ controlled, fully flexible, test facility, where complete access to all functions of the operation and control can be tested without constraints of commercial issues.

The facility can also assess second life, or re-purposed, electric vehicle battery packs in grid support applications. This is carried out using dc-dc converters which can interface these batteries to a 100kW ABB inverter.
