Un centro de investigación checo ha desarrollado baterías de flujo redox de vanadio muy duraderas que pueden apilarse en baterías de alta capacidad y una potencia que oscila entre unos pocos kW (aplicaciones residenciales) hasta cientos de MW (almacenamiento de red). La batería de flujo redox es un sistema de almacenamiento electroquímico que permite almacenar energía en dos soluciones que contienen diferentes pares redox. Esta batería es más segura porque hay menos riesgo de que se mezclen los electrolitos. El centro de investigación busca fabricantes de baterías con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Summary:
A Czech research centre has developed a low cost vanadium redox flow battery stack with high durability which can be stacked into batteries with high capacity and power rating of a few kW (residential applications) up to hundred MW system (grid storage). The research centre is seeking battery manufacturers interested in license agreement.
Description:
The redox flow battery is an electrochemical storage system which allows energy to be stored in two solutions containing different redox couples. In comparison with conventional batteries such as lead-acid or lithium batteries, the capacity of the system is determined by the size of the electrolyte tanks. This battery system also provides greater safety since there is less risk of mixing the electrolytes. The battery is non-flammable and even when overloaded there is no risk of explosion.

The Czech research centre has developed and patented a new type vanadium redox flow battery stack which is composed of 20-30 single-cells serially connected with respect to the electric current flow. Each single-cell consists of the following components: distribution plates of optimised geometry, membrane of low electric resistance and low permeability for vanadium ions and carbon based porous electrode with optimised structure and surface composition of the fibres. The individual cells are mutually separated by conductive composite bipolar plates. The battery stack based on these components provides the minimal discharge power of 2 kW at 80 % DC/DC efficiency. The application of the battery stack is in the field of stationary storage electrical energy to peak shaving, load-levelling, back-up and stabilization of renewable sources, etc.

The research centre is offering license agreement to battery manufacturers. Specifications of license agreement will be negotiated (license fee, etc.).

The developed vanadium redox flow battery stack is an efficient, safe and durable solution for stationary storage of electric energy. When compared to conventional batteries, it offers various advantages such as:

1) Independent set-up of power and capacity according to the requirements (from a few kW to hundred MW system)
2) Extreme durability of more than 15 years and 10 000 charging cycles
3) Safe operation, non-flammability and non-explosiveness
4) Low production costs
