Details

Tittle:
Biobank of patients with acute or chronic cardiac diseases for testing of new diagnostics or biomarkers
Summary:
An academic research group from Switzerland offers a biobank of blood samples collected from patients undergoing evaluation for myocardial infarction, heart failure, syncope, and coronary artery disease, collected in multicenter projects. They are looking for research cooperation partners interested in testing new diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers in patients after confirmation in animal models. The goal is to develop faster diagnostic pathways in clinical cardiology and emergency medicine.
Description:
Cardiovascular diseases are a main component of the health burden worldwide. With increasing pressure due to rising health care costs, there exists a great need for reliable and cheap diagnosis of acute and chronic cardiac diseases.

To address this, an academic research group from Switzerland has initiated four large and mostly multicentric clinical studies, aimed at testing potential blood markers and electrocardiographic markers ("biomarkers") for the early diagnosis of suspected heart attack, heart failure, cardiac syncope, or coronary artery disease. Over the last years they have enrolled >15.000 patients and collected a vast biobank consisting of serum and plasma samples of peripheral venous blood stored at -80°, as well as electrocardiographic data collected at 1000Hz. Further, they have detailed information on the patients, a detailed and methodologically robust final diagnosis (essential for performance evaluation of biomarkers) and the patients clinical course over 2-5 years.

They have a strong research team with in-depth methodologic, statistical, and medical knowledge about the field of biomarkers. The research group is looking for partners interested in testing their new diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers in patients after confirmation in animal models.
The collaboration partner would get access to the biobanks for testing of their new biomarker. The research group will prepare samples for transport to the partner institution, where measurements are made. To ensure best scientific quality and avoid bias, samples need to be measured blinded to the adjudicated final diagnosis.
This independent validation of pilot study data and the manufacturer independent assessment of the new biomarker and derivation of diagnostic and prognostic cut-offs or models, will help to objectively assess the potential clinical utility. Publication of results in medical journals will further increase the visibility of the new biomarkers.

Biotech companies, pharma companies, research centers or universities are sought for research cooperation.
Collaboration as part of a consortium for e.g. Horizon 2020 or Eurostars is also sought.
Advantages and Innovations:
The study groups excellent track record in clinical research (>500 publications) and large biobank (>25.000 blood samples, >3500 electrocardiogram samples) provide the opportunity to assess the utility of new biomarkers and the move from bench to bedside in very short time. The data sets are large enough to allow a derivation and validation set with high statistical power, further strengthening results generated for later approval processes.
For biomarker discovery from frozen and stored samples, the Swiss researchers can provide samples of well-described patients for initial evaluation.
Stage of Development:
Field tested/evaluated

CommeR Statunts Regarding IPR Status:
IPR will be discussed depending on type of project and partner; samples owned by institution.
