Dutch sustainable biopark for developing and demonstrating integrated biorefinery systems
Summary:
A Dutch bio application centre is specialized in piloting and testing innovative technologies in biorefineries. The centre created a biopark on pilot scale, making use of the favourable permitting conditions. The centre is seeking partners for its biorefinery, that are active in biomass fermentation, algae farming, production of bioethanol and sustainable energy within the framework of commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Description:
A Dutch Bio Application Centre is specialized in piloting and testing innovative technologies in biorefinery and is a part of a larger testing centre on renewables including full scale solar and wind. The biorefinery is focused on decentral (farm scale) technologies in an attempt to increase the added value of green raw materials that are produced on the farm and to gain better profits for the farmers. Herewith a great number of technologies (separation, extraction, size reduction etc.) are used in different combinations to meet the requirements for further application of the products. The intention is to use biomass as efficiently as possible: all components are optimally used and residual flows are minimised and brought back to the land as a fertilizer.

As in an oil refinery, biorefinery attempts to unravel all the raw biomass materials into various useful, applicable fractions of value. A large difference between a biorefinery and an oil refinery is that there has already been more than 50 years of experience with the latter, while many new biorefinery concepts are still being developed or have still to be developed. Besides, biorefinery takes usually place at a much smaller scale and with completely different equipment. The idea behind it is the same, but the execution is completely different. To cope with this problem and to enhance the transition towards a biobased economy the Bio Application Centre created a real sustainable Biopark on their site of 1200 ha. On pilot scale the centre are developing and demonstrating state of the art technologies related to sustainable energy and biomass processing.

The Bio Application Centre is aming at expanding the piloting and testing park using more innovative biorefinery technologies to be integrated in the available materials and energy streams. The Centre is seeking for partnerships in the area of biomass fermentation, bioethanol production, upgrading of raw biogas, purification of side streams, algae production, protein extraction etc. within the framework of commercial agreements with technical assistance. Support can be provided at biochemical or biotechnological synthesis (fermentation with the use of enzymes, yeasts, fungi, bacteria and algae production), thermochemical conversion technology (pyrolysis, torrefaction) and separation technology (extraction, pressing, filtration, centrifuging).
Advantages and Innovations:
Due to societal pressure there is increasing awareness for making the entire production chain more sustainable and ready for the transition towards an biobased economy. Within a biobased economy one wants to use biomass as much as possible and to utilise all components of the biomass as well as possible, following the so-called cascading principle. It indicates that the added value of biomass is determined by the way it is applied. When the market works well, this added value translates into a higher value that is given to biomass. By applying biorefinery to different components of the biomass it can be freed to minimal waste production. After refinery, the various components have to meet certain specifications to be fit for their applications in f.i. building materials or as a chemical building block. In this way they represent a potential higher economic value than in the present unrefined application. However the transition from an oil based towards a biobased economy is still in its infancy and there remains a lot to be done. This is the rationale of the Dutch Bio Application Centre to develop an innovative sustainable Biopark on 1200 ha, where biomass production and biorefinery are combined in a closed loop situation. This park uniquely demonstrates on pilot scale how state of the art bio- and energy- related technologies operate in an integrated manner. The piloting- and testing park gives room at doing experiments, execution of yield tests and debugging of prototype installations, all to enhance the transition from an oil based economy to a biobased economy, within the confinement of the future necessity to feed 9 billion people worldwide in 2050.
