Un centro de investigación español ha desarrollado un nuevo biosensor impedimétrico en 3D que permite la detección directa de analitos en una muestra biológica de origen humano, veterinario o ambiental. Este biosensor aumenta considerablemente la sensibilidad a los cambios de impedancia que se producen en procesos bioquímicos en comparación con los dispositivos planares convencionales (dos órdenes de magnitud). El biosensor se caracteriza porque los electrodos son altamente conductores y se separan por una barrera aislante que ayuda a la detección directa de analitos de diferentes tipos de muestras. Se buscan empresas interesadas en desarrollar las aplicaciones y establecer acuerdos de licencia o cooperación técnica.

Summary:
A Spanish research organisation has developed a new 3D-impedimetric biosensor that allows a direct detection of analytes from a biological sample of human, veterinarian or environmental origin. The biosensor increases significantly the sensitivity to changes in impedance deriving from biochemical processes in comparison with conventional planar devices (2 orders of magnitude).

Description:
This biosensor is characterized in that the electrodes are highly conductive and are separated by an insulating barrier that helps the direct detection of analytes from different kind of samples.

The operation is based on the interference that occurs between the electric field generated between the two interdigitated electrodes and the molecules formed by the interaction of the analytes to be detected in the sample solution and the receptor biomolecules (antigens, DNA, etc) immobilized on the surface of the insulating barrier or on the surface of the electrodes.

Due to the presence of the insulating barrier in the patented device the reaction between the analytes to be detected and the receptor molecules take place mainly in the surface of the insulating barrier, and not in the solution, increasing the variation of the electric field generated between the electrodes. This enhancement gives rise to an increment of the sensitivity to the impedance change, allowing the direct and label-free quantification of this variation by measuring the impedance at a certain frequency.
The fact that the reaction takes place in that isolating barrier constitute a significant difference with respect to the traditional planar sensors in which the biochemical reactions are carried out in the solution and the variation of the electrical field generated between the electrodes is much lower (2 orders of magnitude).

Detectability of this label-free device is of the same order (sub microg L-1) as other analytical methods such as ELISA or other fluorescence-labelled methods. However, the analysis is faster and the procedure easier than a traditional ELISA.

The Spanish research center has broad experience in the development of immunodiagnostics and electrical readout systems. The center is searching for companies that develop analytical or diagnostic systems interested in the implementation of this biosensor for the detection of analytes in different fields (clinical diagnostic, food safety or environmental control), under a patent license. Companies interested in this technology should carry out either by themselves or through research collaboration with this organization some further work to reach the market for tailored applications.
Advantages and Innovations:
The biosensor allows:
· a direct label-free quantification of the analytes present in a biological sample in solution.
· an increase in the sensitivity in two orders of magnitude (signal/noise relation) in relation to the current planar sensors.
· portable systems and "in situ" measurements.
· possibility of simultaneous detection of several parameters, of great importance when the biological sample is limited and when multiple assays are required.
· application in clinical tests (human, veterinarian), and in environmental or food control.

In addition, the biosensor can be miniaturizated and arrays can be fabricated and integrated on a single substrate, which involves obtaining microdiagnostic devices.
