Investigadores españoles han desarrollado recientemente un sensor electroquímico autoalimentado para la detección y monitorización de metabolitos clave, como lactato, glucosa y alcohol, entre otros, en muestras fisiológicas. Actualmente hay una demanda creciente de herramientas de diagnóstico rápido de determinadas enfermedades, como diabetes y problemas cardiovasculares, mediante la monitorización de metabolitos (lactato o glucosa). Este sensor puede desarrollarse con sustratos flexibles y es biocompatible, muy indicado para aplicaciones médicas no invasivas en forma de parches cutáneos o lentes de contacto. El equipo de investigación busca socios industriales con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Summary:
Spanish researchers have recently developed a self-powered electrochemical sensor for detection and monitoring of key metabolites such as lactate, glucose, and alcohol, among others, in physiological samples. The sensor can be developed on flexible substrates and is biocompatible, very suitable for non-invasive medical applications in the form of skin-patches or contact lenses.
Industrial partners interested on lactate, glucose and alcohol detection are being sought for license agreement.
Description:
There is a growing need for tools that allow rapid diagnosis of certain diseases such as diabetes and mainly cardiovascular problems through key metabolite monitoring such as lactate and/or glucose.
Most of the commercial tools are based on colorimetric test strips, which are inexpensive and very easy to use, but in most cases only offer qualitative information. On the other hand, other commercial tools are more complex and need a reader for giving quantitative data. This makes them significantly more expensive.
In order to overcome this challenge, a self-powered quantitative and lowcost electrochromic biosensor has been developed. It is easy to use, can be developed over biocompatible and flexible substrates and allows the quantitative monitoring of key metabolites for a reliable, rapid diagnosis.
The biosensor is able to generate its own energy. It is is based on
electrochemical detection combining advanced design and printing techniques. Integrating an electrochromic display into the sensors enables the acquisition of quantitative information readable by the naked eye.
Advantages and Innovations:
Their main application is in the field of non-invasive medical applications which require the monitoring of key metabolites such as lactate and glucose in sweat, saliva and tears. It can be easily implemented on skinpatches or contact lenses.

- Quantitative measurement biocompatible device, amenable to mass production at very low cost.
- Fully screen-printable on a range of substrates and formats.
- Higher integration capacity and monolithically built (printed electronics based).
- Self-powered and disposable.
- Easy and convenient to use. No external readers are needed.
