Una universidad técnica checa especializada en combustión y gasificación de combustibles sólidos, especialmente biomasa, ha desarrollado un equipo de calefacción central con circulación de agua caliente mediante el sistema de distribución de un edificio. El calor se genera en un horno mediante la combustión de biomasa con alto contenido de humedad. El contenido de humedad puede alcanzar el 40% o un porcentaje superior, sin una reducción en la eficiencia ni un incremento importante de emisiones contaminantes. La caldera de condensación es capaz de extraer calor latente del vapor de agua y recuperar calor adicional para calefacción central. La universidad busca socios industriales interesados en establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Summary:
The proposed technology is equipment developed by a Czech technical university and designed for central heating by hot water circulating through a distribution system of a building. The heat is generated in a furnace by combustion of biomass with high-moisture content. The moisture content can be 40% or higher without considerable decrease in efficiency and without significant increase in pollutant emissions. The university is looking for industrial partners interested in licensing agreement.

The proposed technology was designed by a research team at a specialised research centre which is part of one of the leading universities in the Czech Republic.
The Centre´s research and development activities focus primarily on combustion and gasification of solid fuels - especially biomass.
Concerning combustion, research concentrates on fuel assessments, analyses of combustion efficiency, production of harmful substances, equipment modernisation for increased efficiencies, and operational reliability. In accordance with the certification of Czech Accreditation Institute, the Centre is an accredited laboratory authorised for emission measurements and testing of thermal energy facilities.
The Centre can offer services in a field of research, development, design and testing of local and central heating hot water boilers.
The developed technology is a water heater fuelled by solid biomass with high moisture content. A great portion of heat produced by burning the biomass is consumed for evaporation of the water content. The designed condensing boiler is able to extract latent heat of the water vapour in the exhaust gases and recover additional heat for central heating. The fuel is transported to the combustion chamber from the hopper by a screw conveyor, this enabling the feeding process to be fully automatized and controlled by a logic system.
The condensing boiler is designed as a modular system where individual sub-elements are interconnected. This solution offers great variability that makes it possible to achieve a power range from 10 to 500 kW.
When burning wood chips of 50% moisture, a condensing unit contributes to the total thermal output of the boiler by about 10% without significant increase in pollutant emissions.
The condensing boiler requires professional installation and regular service; however any person can operate the device easily without any qualification or having pre-training.
The control of the condensing boiler is crucial to ensuring that it operates in the most economic and fuel efficient way. The burner is controlled by an embedded system with built-in logic to control the output of the burner to match the load and give best performance. The system is easy to understand.
The Centre is looking for licensing agreement with a company involved in manufacturing of boilers of small and medium outputs suitable for central heating of households and public buildings. The partner should be capable of performing mass production of the presented condensing boiler.
Advantages and Innovations:
Condensing boilers of small and medium outputs are almost exclusively applied only in the field of combustion of gaseous and liquid fuels. In the case of biomass, the condensing boiler is used only for burning of pellets with very low moisture content (typically 5% by mass). Condensing boilers of small and medium outputs for biomass with a higher percentage of moisture content have not been introduced on the market yet.
The designed condensing boiler is equipped with a condensing coil, which is either part of the boiler´s main heat exchanger, or a separate unit placed in the flue gas channel before an exhaust fan. The flue gases give off heat in the main heat exchanger and then are routed to the condensing heat exchanger where water vapour condenses and additional latent heat is extracted. The condensing heat exchanger is made of corrosion resistant material. The internal arrangement is counter-flow enabling self-cleaning of the heat transfer surfaces.
The condensing boiler is designed as a modular system where individual sub-elements are interconnected. This solution offers great variability that makes it possible to achieve a power range from 10 to 500 kW. The basic components of the whole system include:

· auger feeder
· boiler with a combustion chamber and a heat exchanger
· ash removing device
· exhaust fan
· condensing unit
· control unit
The proposed technology allows combusting solid biomass fuel with moisture content exceeding 40%. When burning wood chips of 50% moisture, condensing unit contributes to the total thermal output of about 10%.
