El catalizador sólido presenta una gran actividad por unidad de masa, reduciendo la cantidad necesaria para la reacción. El centro de investigación español tiene amplia experiencia en desarrollar nuevos materiales que se aplican como catalizadores en diferentes reacciones químicas industriales y el centro argentino está especializado en investigación científica en el área de química. Se busca un socio industrial interesado en utilizar el catalizador en la producción de gas de síntesis y establecer un acuerdo de licencia de patente.

Two research institutions from Spain and Argentina have developed a novel catalyst with high porosity, high dispersion of the active phase and high resistance to temperature, for being used in water gas shift reaction and in partial oxidation of methane. The solid catalyst exhibits a high activity per mass unit, decreasing therefore the amount of solid required for reaction.
An industrial partner interested in the catalyst for use in syngas production, under patent licence, is sought.
Description:
Carbon dioxide is one of the most important greenhouse gases, being the most abundant. For this reason, in the last years there have been many efforts in decreasing the emission of this gas and also in looking for chemical processes for the re-use of the gas. One of these processes with a huge potential in the future is the reverse water gas shift reaction, which transforms the CO2 in carbon monoxide by catalytic reduction with hydrogen. The resulting synthesis gas (syngas) is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of multiple chemicals and combustibles.
The invention consists on a method for the synthesis of a solid catalyst applicable in the syngas production, which leads to materials with high macroporosity, small particle size and high degree of crystallinity. The special porous structure leads to to a high dispersion of the active phase of the catalyst, which enables an exceptionally high activity per mass unit.
The catalyst was tested in the reverse water gas shift reaction, producing the maximum conversion of CO2 (at thermodynamic equilibrium), such as 60% at 700 ° C, and with a selectivity to carbon monoxide of 100%.
The partial oxidation of methane reaction was tested too with this material, resulting in the maximum methane conversions (at thermodynamic equilibrium), near 85% at 700 ° C, with a molar hydrogen yield of 1.3 moles H2 / Moles of CH4.
The Spanish and the Argentinian research centres are searching for a Company interested in the use of this novel material for the recycling of carbon dioxide or for the partial oxidation of methane, under a patent license agreement. Alternatively a manufacturer of catalyst could license too this technology. The catalyst has only been tested at a laboratory scale and the material has only been synthetized at this scale. Therefore some further development might be need before reaching an industrial use and the Spanish research centre could collaborate with the company in that project.
The Spanish research centre has a broad experience in developing novel materials for being applied as catalysts in different industrial chemical reactions. Additionally, the Argentinian research centre is highly active in scientific research in chemical area.


Advantages and Innovations:
- The catalyst shows high catalytic activity per mass unit, representing significant saving
- The synthesis method is simple and scalable at the industrial level
- For the reverse water gas shift reaction, the catalytic activity is maintained during continuous reaction processes of at least 100 hours.
- The material has many other applications as catalyst in gas phase reactions, related to the protection of the environment and the production of clean energy.

However, the catalyst is not developed for being used in an industrial scale and it will need further studies, that could be done in collaboration with R-Y-D Center (resistance studies, manufacturing studies, etc...) under a collaboration Agreement.
