Una pyme alemana ha desarrollado, en cooperación con un centro de investigación, una herramienta cartográfica para depósitos antropogénicos en vertederos industriales. Mediante el análisis automático de datos satelitales, la tecnología ayuda a detectar posibles localizaciones de vertederos. Los datos de teledetección combinados con datos sobre la composición química de los residuos han dado lugar a un catastro de recursos que puede emplearse en la recuperación de materias primas, como metales y minerales. La empresa busca administraciones públicas y socios del sector privado que trabajen en el campo de recuperación de productos mineros y residuos antropogénicos con el fin de establecer acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica.


Ressource cadaster for recovering raw materials from industrial heaps and dumps
A German SME has co-developed a mapping tool for anthropogenic deposits in industrial heaps. Remote sensing data combined with data about the chemical composition of the residues have led to a resource cadaster which can be used for the recovery of scarce raw materials such as metals and minerals. Players from public administrations and the private sector dealing with the recovery of mining products and anthropogenic residues are sought for commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Industrial dumps and slag heaps hold a lot of useful recyclable material which can be reintroduced in the material cycle. This includes metallurgical residues from heavy industries such as dusts, toxic gas sludges, non-utilised slags and other metallurgical debris. Process-related it is mainly iron. With increasing prices for raw materials it is becoming economically interesting to develop these resources in the near future in the context of urban mining. With regard to economic feasibility studies, the resource volumes in smelter heaps must also be known. However, comprehensive data regarding the exact reusable material potential of these dumps and heaps was missing.
A German SME in cooperation with a research institution has developed a national resource land register for smelter heaps. This cadastre gives an overview on the location of dumps, stockpiles and other landfills. Ideally, it also provides information on the content.
Through automatic analysis of satellite data, the technology helps to detect possible locations of heaps. Elevation data is derived and analysed, texture and structure analyses are conducted, spectral indices of potential recyclable materials are identified and data on vegetation succession is used as an indicator for acid or iron-rich soils.
National archives and land registries on contaminated sites were checked and archives of mining authorities and companies analysed. In future, it will be possible with a click to bring up the desired deposit in large format. Additional data on historic and current aerial photographs, photos with information on heap bodies and their substances will also be available.
Furthermore, concepts for the recovery of reusable materials are developed based on chemical and pyro-metallurgical laboratory tests which then, in combination with an obstacle analysis are incorporated into the utilisation strategies.
In addition, the researchers test the dump´s deposited material. These tests also include methods of terrestrial reflection spectrometry, in addition to laboratory analyses. The tests are rounded out by an airborne hyper-spectral flyover. The results of the tests and the flyover are combined with the 3D model of the dump in the GIS. The recorded data and the derived information constitute the foundation for the development of methods for the recovery of reusable materials.

The technology can be used for old heaps and heaps still in use.

Players from public administrations and private / industrial sector dealing with recovery and recycling, environmental agencies, mining authorities and associations, partners from geological sciences and related fields are sought for commercial agreements with technical assistance. The partner would integrate the GIS system into their existing monitoring structures. The necessary know-how as well as adaptation and installation support will be provided by the German company.

The innovation lies in the automation, combination of functions and integration of diverse data sets. The new technology thus entails the following advantages:

- more systematic scientific data basis for decision-making in post-mining recycling strategies and urban mining planning
- improved accuracy compared to conventional methods (archives)
- cost reduction due to time efficiency
- Mapping of heaps in areas where archives contain little data becomes possible
