Este aparato consta de una o dos cámaras cilíndricas que son herméticas, evitando fugas y obteniendo unos resultados fiables. Las célula permite realizar las medidas experimentales necesarias para determinar el comportamiento de materiales sólidos en relación a la resistencia a gases. Las medidas son útiles para determinar la protección de hormigón armado contra la corrosión y evaluar sus propiedades cuando se utiliza como barrera contra el radón. El centro de investigación busca socios industriales con el fin de licenciar la patente.

A Spanish Research Institution has developed an apparatus to study gas diffusion through materials. The necessary experimental measurements to determine the behavior of solid materials in relation to resistance to gasses can be made using this cell. These measurements are useful to determine reinforced concrete protection against corrosion and evaluate its properties when used as a barrier against radon. Industrial partners are being sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement.
Description:
Studying diffusion through materials has different technical applications. In particular, research on gas diffusion in construction materials, such as concrete, has significant relevance to characterise the durability of these structures. Therefore, determining gas diffusion through concrete is especially important in order to determine the ability of the material to protect the reinforcement against corrosion. Additionally, in order to be able to characterise the material as protection against radon gas coming from the ground, it is necessary to measure its radon diffusion coefficient.
The developed technology consists of a cell to study gas diffusion through a sample. This apparatus can be composed of one or two cylindrical chambers that are airtight, avoiding leaks and obtaining reliable results. The mono-chamber version (open configuration) is useful when the gas exist in the exterior of the chamber. Otherwise, the double-chamber version (closed configuration) is adequate when working with gasses that are not naturally present in the air, dangerous gasses or when it is necessary to measure the gas volume in both sides of the sample.
The cell configuration allows the calculation of the gas flow that diffuses through the sample, the gas diffusion coefficient and the amount of gas trapped inside the sample. The measurement of gas concentration inside the chambers is done using sensors that measure, in a selective way, variations in the physicochemical conditions inside the apparatus.

Therefore, industrial partners who work in related topics, such as construction materials, environmental control, audit firms, among others, are being sought for patent licensing, technology development and commercialization.
