The Bulgarian research institute has over 40 years of experience in conducting fundamental and applied research and development in the field of human and veterinary medicine, focused on morphology, cell biology, pathology (pathological and clinical aspects of infectious, non-infectious and parasitic diseases) and anthropology encompassing important health and demographic issues.

Duck embryo cells have application in the development of different vaccines for human use in treating of pre- and post-exposure to viruses.

The duck embryo cells line is described as a standard cell culture system, used in research and applied in biotechnological production. It is derived from normal cells of 14 day old duck embryos. The line has covered all requirements of the international standards for permanent cell lines. It is a suitable product for production of recombined virus vectors that present a basis of the vaccine therapy for some human or animal diseases, including flu viruses and mammalian viruses.

The organisation is looking for industrial partners and seeks commercial agreement with technical assistance (providing the necessary know-how and assuring technical assistance for adaptation to the needs of the client), joint ventures with industrial partners for implementing in the practice and licensing agreements with companies.
Advantages and Innovations:
The advantages of the developed duck embryo cell line when compared with primary cell cultures are:
- the higher cellular yield (cell mass),
- maintenance in simple and cheap growth media with lower supplement quantity
- relatively stable phenotype and the permanent control of possible contaminations.

The innovation is related to the new technology of creation of the new cell line using duck embryo cells.
