Las propiedades especiales de haces de rayos X suministrados por fuentes de radiación sincrotrón (alta intensidad, baja divergencia y capacidad de ajuste) son esenciales para recoger datos de difracción de rayos X de alta calidad a partir de cristales individuales de macromoléculas y sus complejos. La tecnología se utiliza para la caracterización de principios farmacéuticos activos y fórmulas in situ y su comportamiento en diversas condiciones, estudio de vectores para administración de fármacos y determinación de estructuras cristalinas de medicamentos mediante microcristalografía. El centro busca socios en los sectores de farmacia y biotecnología con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica, investigación y comercialización con asistencia técnica.

Description:
The special properties of the X-ray beams provided by synchrotron radiation sources (high intensity, low divergence, tunability) are now essential for collecting high-quality X-ray diffraction data from single crystals of macromolecules and their complexes. In recent years a great deal of effort has been devoted to automate the macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines of the institution and to provide robotic sample changers. The beamlines are now more user-friendly, more reliable and much faster. It is also possible to routinely collect diffraction data from crystals with a volume as small as 5-Y-micro;m3.

X-ray diffraction studies of macromolecular crystals are used to reveal the atomic arrangements of proteins, nucleic acids and viruses. The structural knowledge gained using this technique is a powerful tool in the drug design process.

To the industrial community the institution offers rapid access to MX beamlines. A data collection service (MXpress) has been implemented to perform experiments: frozen samples sent via courier are analysed by experienced scientists who provide clients of the MXpress service with both raw diffraction images and processed data, as well as a full report on the data collections carried out through secure servers.

Thanks to the automation of high performance facilities, protein crystallography measurements are possible through both mail-in and remote access from the institution home lab.
