Description:
This Spanish research center, belongs to the national network of Scientific -Y- Technical Infrastructures (ICTS), is open to scientific and technological use by the international scientific and technological community. Its research activities are mainly focus on human evolution.

The technology offered results from the innovation actions of creating synergetic methodologies combining the advantages of mass spectrometry instruments (MC-ICP-MS and ICP-HR-MS - Multi Collector and High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), with laser ablation and other atomic spectrometry techniques, proper physical sample preparation and a dedicated Clean Laboratory.

The Spanish centre offers services of microanalyses with a spatial sampling resolution below 10 micra, combined with pseudo-non-destructive properties, which is very attractive in electronics, jewellery, geology, archaeology or forensics. Relevant isotope reference materials as magnesium, copper, nickel, uranuium, etc. are available for application in the development of new essays.

The offered technology has applications in several fields:

- Exploration studies: Radionuclide migration paths in fractured rock can be led to appreciate the effect of drilling. Sensitive multielemental mapping techniques are used to determine the distribution of such (ultra)trace elements in core profiles.

- Enhanced oil recovery and shale gas studies: Electrokinetic phenomena applied to enhance oil recovery from sand reservoirs. ICP-MS solutions for controlling the clay element concentration.

- Chemicals, semiconductors and materials: Control of trace impurities in materials and chemicals, including semiconductors. Sorting out of spectroscopic interferences on key contaminant elements (e.g. phosphorus and titanium).

- Metal detection in crystals: Lead analysis in zircon mono crystals, metal contaminant quantification in diluted liquid crystal.

- Nuclear safety: Determination of uranium isotopes in urine from workers of nuclear plants or from military personnel.

- Geology/Archaeology: Dating, palaeoclimatic studies, provenance studies.

- Detection limits reach sub-ppt (part per trillion) levels for almost all elements.
- Capability of microanalysis pseudo-non-destructive by laser ablation.
