Un instituto de investigación búlgaro con experiencia en el campo de vidrio y cerámicas vidriadas ha desarrollado nuevas cerámicas vidriadas con apariencia de granito a partir de diferentes residuos industriales inorgánicos. El enfoque utilizado ofrece la posibilidad de inerciación de grandes cantidades de residuos peligrosos para obtener paneles de azulejos de alta calidad con apariencia de granito. La combinación de una apariencia atractiva y excelentes propiedades mecánicas se consigue gracias a la síntesis de vidrios precursores originales, que se caracterizan por una buena sinterabilidad y una tendencia de cristalización específica. El instituto de investigación busca fabricantes de vidrio y cerámica, productores de residuos inorgánicos peligrosos o administraciones con el fin de establecer acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica.

Summary:
A Bulgarian research institute with experience in the field of glass and glass-ceramics developed new building granite-like glass-ceramics by different inorganic industrial residues. The used approach gives possibility for inertization of huge amounts of hazardous wastes into high-quality tiling panels with granite appearance. The institute seeks partners like hazardous inorganic waste, glass or ceramics producers, or administrations for commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
Bulgarian research institute provide technology which is related to problems that arising with various inorganic hazardous industrial wastes. One of the successful strategies is inertization of these materials through usage as raw materials for manufactures with high volume. From this point of view, the present idea is one of the most attractive approaches in the field of ceramics and glass ceramics by industrial wastes.
The proposed technology is based on the vitrification of harmful inorganic residues, water quenching of the resulting melts and subsequent sinter-crystallization of obtained glass granulate (frit), glass powders and eventually rejects from ceramic industry. In this manner several industrial wastes can be used for synthesize of tiling materials with an attractive appearance coupled with properties, surpassing several times ones of the traditional tiling materials and natural stones.
Practically, the proposed technology is somewhat similar to that of the luxury Japanese glass-ceramic "Neoparies", which, however, is based on fixed chemical composition produced with traditional raw materials for the glass industry.
The technology of granite-like glass-ceramics from hazardous industrial wastes contains the following steps:
· Synthesis of an original glass composition with specific sinter-crystallization behavior.
· Preparation of glass batch with high amount of hazardous residues, corresponding to the original glass composition.
· Glass melting at effective technological regime and simple water quenching of the melt as glass frit.
· Grinding, eventual partial milling of the glass frits and/or addition of ceramics rejects.
· Sinter-crystallization of the glass granulates, placed in refractory molds without preliminary pressing, at a specific for each composition regime.
· Grinding and polishing of thus obtained building panels in order to elucidate a granite-like appearance.
The aim of the proposed technology is to resolve huge environmental problems, related with the immobilization of storage of harmful streams producing materials. At the same time it is expected the final materials will have high market profit. Therefore, the research group is seeking for producer of hazardous inorganic wastes or/and municipality/administrations together with glass or ceramics manufactures for commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Advantages and Innovations:
The proposed technology gives opportunity to use high amounts of hazardous industrial wastes and to produce granite-like tiling materials with excellent characteristics and potentially high market price.
The combination of attractive appearance coupled and very good mechanical properties is related to the successful synthesis of original parent glasses, which can be characterized simultaneously with a good sinter-ability and a specific crystallization trend. The granite-like effect is result of definite surface crystallization of the grains and/or chromatic effects due to usage of different frits fractions and/or ceramics rejects.
The proposed technology gives possibility to produce large building panels (up to 1-1.5 m2) with different size and profiles, as well as to develop new composite building materials with improved thermo-insulation properties. The main facilities and infrastructures are typical for the glass and ceramics industries.
Some chemical compositions of appropriated parent glasses were protected years ago by a Bulgarian patent, which was awarded with the special prize at the Bulgarian Patent Office. Other compositions (arising from the vitrification of fly ashes from urban waste incineration, blast furnace slag or residues from zinc or cupper productions) are partially discussed in research publications in peer review journals.
The main know-how of the research team is the synthesis of appropriate original glass compositions, the corresponding optimal melting regimes and the final sinter-crystallization heat-treatment schedules.
