Advantages and Innovations:

When considering fibre optic connectors for industrial applications, the crucial issue is to keep the physically contacting heads of the fibres in a perfect cleanliness. It needs to be remembered, that the diameter of the light transmitting core of the fibre is 50µm or 62.5µm for multimode fibre (MM) and 9µm for single mode fibre (SM). To compare and recognise the scale, it needs to be quoted, that the average human hair has a diameter of 70-80µm. Any piece of dust that appears on the head of the fibre core is able to stop or significantly attenuate the transmission of the optical signal, and possibly, cause the permanent damage of the polished surfaces of the physically contacting fibres, what can result in a complete loss of the transmitting capabilities of the fibre connection.

In the physical contact connectors the optical signal is transferred by direct contact of the polished heads of the fibres, that are glued in the precise, ceramic (rarely metallic) tubes, called ferrules. The drawing below illustrates such connection. The exact positioning of the ferrules is provided by the precise sleeve, usually ceramic. Precise pressure on the fibres is applied by springs, that comes together with male or female contacts. Contacts are saddled in the insert, which is mounted inside the metal or composite shell.
